@Pepijn I think you overestimate school trips in many countries. I've been on so few I could probably count them on one hand and we never left the county. There's just no money for such "fancy" trips in a lot of schools, at least in the UK.

@kemra102 No I don't. That's why I specifically added the comment on how some countries actively subsidise this.

People in the comments pointed out how at least both the Scottish and Welsh parliaments offer subsidy 😉

My hypothesis is that a significant mid-double-digit percentage of people have at least visited the one in their home country (often as part of a school trip) and the other options will all be single digit percentages.

I'm not gonne do the "boost for scientific accuracy" thing here.. but, uhm.. if you can boost this it'll be more accurate, in a scientistic way.

@Pepijn Only one that I can think of (the US Capitol) and it's not even on my home continent never mind my home country. But I mean I'm European, it's possible I tripped over one at some point and forgot about it

@Pepijn @clay I've only visited one, but it's *not* my home country's (USA). It's Iceland's Alþingi in Reykjavík.

"isn't this just asking if people are rich and/or in a big country"

People replied the same thing on the poll asking whether they'd personally sat on a cow 🙂

As with the cows there's much more to it. There's lots of European countries with subsidised trips for schools to visit the legislature. And other, small countries, without that.

Also: Seriously. I'm not asking if you own a moon. The fast majority of us have the financial means to visit another city at least once in our life..

Reply to my own poll: 7 (assuming the Welsh Senedd* counts).

Fond memory: in 2005 I tagged along with senior-staff members of the NGO I was with, to visit someone in the Greek parliament. As we arrived there was a festive mood. We got cake. I still don't know if it was the birthday of the Greek state or some guy.

*I first visited a month before opening to help test audio systems in the main meeting space. Visited again on the day it opened. Very grateful for that, it's a beautiful symbol 🙂

@clay @Pepijn I've been to DC & seen a lot of the sights, but never visited the Capitol. I've been to Independence Hall though, so I guess in a sense I *have* visited the US legislature.

@Pepijn Wait… If the Welsh Senedd counts then I should be able to count Canadian provincial legislatures, no? That would add 3 to my total, and put me at 7 as well.

@Pepijn You will certainly find some Canadians—especially Quebeckers—who would claim the same for their provinces.

@Pepijn Oddly enough, I’ve never visited my own nation’s parliament (US Capitol building) but I have been to Scotland’s. Does the U.N. count? Been there…

@fgraver Oh yes. Quebec has such an interesting special status. I think their rights are directly ingrained in the founding constitution or something?

But in the end Quebec is just a province in a federal system though. Wales etc are countries making up unitary state 🙂

                                      @MonniauxD Nope, not national parliaments.

If lower governments like those count I'm sure many people go in double digits 🙂

@Pepijn if a national parliament has two houses in separate buildings, do they count 1 or 2

How many national parliaments (the buildings) have you visited?

My hypothesis is that a significant mid-double-digit percentage of people have at least visited the one in their home country (often as part of a school trip) and the other options will all be single digit percentages.

I'm not gonne do the "boost for scientific accuracy" thing here.. but, uhm.. if you can boost this it'll be more accurate, in a scientistic way.

@Pepijn I've been to the parliament buildings of England, Scotland and Germany.

I wanted a debate in England, watched another visitor get shouted at for sitting in an MPs seat in Scotland and used the bathroom in the German building.
