      Tangent, why does Apple not make computers like this anymore?

      (this is a rhetorical question, you do not need to reply)

        @thomasfuchs If I recall correctly, there are several of those CPUs on the surface of Mars. My Yosemite case long ago lost the G3 in favor of a G4. The machine was a trusty web server for the local MUG for many years.

          @thomasfuchs it's delightful to me that those chips are a) like $200k each, and b) reside in the part of the satellite named the "bus".

          "as in PCI or city?"

          Yes.

            @thomasfuchs TIL Power PC lives on as Power ISA. I didn't realize that instruction set was still kicking around in things.

              @thomasfuchs I didn’t realize how much I missed this aesthetic.

                @thomasfuchs I love this computer. I bought one in college off ebay for $100 and upgraded it to a 600MHz G4. Still have and still works great.

                  @thomasfuchs absolutely amazing! Back when I could mod my own machines without fear, I put a G3 processor into a 1400 CS. I didn't realize I could run an entire space telescope on that... 🤣

                    @thomasfuchs I loved my B&W G3 400. (Photo from 1999)

                    B&W PowerMac G3

                    I purchased this 400MHz "Blue & White" G3 Macintosh in January 1999, ordered the day it was unveiled at Macworld San Francisco '99. It ran MacOS 8 and 9 mainly, OS X having arrived only a few months before I upgraded to a "Quicksilver" dual G4 800MHz Mac. This unit had, at it's peak, 512MB RAM, ATI Rage 128 + 3Dfx Voodoo II video and an ATI Rage Pro for 2nd screen as well as a 9GB, 10,000 RPM Ultra-wide SCSI boot disk. I sold this unit in July-August of 2001.

                      @thomasfuchs We looked into buying a rad-hardened CPU some time back for a project. We quickly decided we could do without. $$$$$$
