Who should I be following in the Fediverse? Twitter just makes me sad, and I need a new place to find people doing interesting things.
I'm interested in software development in any programming language, game development, web development, UI, design, and home lab stuff. I'm not interested in AI.

@tylerlwsmith@hachyderm.io I always forget all the cool faces and names on here when I really try to think, but feel free to look through my boosts for ideas (though those are not limited to software and/or gamedev)
-
@tylerlwsmith I have good news for you, that's basically 90% of the people here.

@catraxx I'm glad to be here then

@queenofsquiggles I'll check it out, thank you!

@tylerlwsmith I enjoy reading stuff from @kevlin (active) and @davefarley77 (dormant), and will add my voice to those recommending you also follow some interesting hashtags - which will in turn lead you to discover more new interesting people.

@denny @kevlin @davefarley77 great callouts, I've spent a lot of time watching both of their YouTube videos!
-
@tylerlwsmith One of the best ways is to post stuff with hashtags. And people will spot these.
And also - have patience. Follow those who seem interesting, and when they post, see who replies. It takes time to build up your people.
But it is worth it.
@SteveClough great tip! I hadn't even considered it because hashtags stopped being popular on Twitter in like 2019

-
@tylerlwsmith hmm @MichaelWhelan for scifi art he has done where he discusses his process a bit sharing the cover art and paintings of his career
@hannah is very funny and you may know her from her jeopardy championshippings
@ifixcoinops is just cool but also where else you gonna find a pinball repairman to talk abt pinball repair (and family and being an expat in the usa) these days
@operationpuppet for a henson inspired puppet crafter (and puppeteer)
@joynewacc is a writer and poet in gaza who also helps organize and verify palestinian and gazan fundraisers as well as share her works
@BestGirlGrace and @heatherhorns both really crack me up too but ymmv
also try following hashtags!! favs are (im adding a space so as not to spam the tag feeds) # lichensubscribe and # mosstodon for moss and lichen and forest photography. we also have # silentSunday and # weirdCarMastodon ... im literally running out of space to suggest people lmfao
@hi_cial Thanks for the recommendations!
-
@tylerlwsmith i find it useful to follow super-boosters like @lisamelton for a while, and look at who they boost. There will be some there that you may find interesting enough to follow yourself.
@fnordius thanks for the tip!
-
As you're not on a self-hosted instance all by yourself you could have a look at your instances "Trending" or "Live feed" timeline. And there you've "This server" as well as "All" [all that are federated with your instance] and "Other servers" (which is the same as all but without everything that is also in "This server").
Then follow everyone that posts about things you like. That's basically it

Oh and you can also follow hashtags. You may also check those out, too.
@agowa338 this seems like solid advice, and I had never noticed that the Live Feeds could include other servers
-
@tylerlwsmith Just look at the local timelines from hachyderm, gamedev.lgbt and tech.lgbt
@drgroftehauge yep, that seems like the move!
-
@tylerlwsmith it's prob been mentioned but - follow hashtags, lots of hashtags. Coming from twitter you'll be reluctant to, as I was, but it's glorious!
@TheMightyGit yep, that's the advice I've been getting!
-
@tylerlwsmith you might enjoy following @wcbdata who is setting up and running a maker space.
If you're interested in data, there are a lot of folks on my instance vis.social, that you might like to follow.
@kristinHenry @wcbdata thanks for the recommendation

-
@butterscotch thank you for the shoutout!
οΈ@NicMakesStuff @butterscotch thanks for the recommendation

@tylerlwsmith @kristinHenry Followed back!

@tylerlwsmith I see you already got a ton of great recommendations!
If you can excuse a bit of self-promotion, maybe some of these might interest you?
