Look. If you think these things are just neutral tools, to be used how and when they suit you, then just do that. Why do feel the need to defend and justify using them?
(Again, I know why, this is rhetorical)

@jenniferplusplus Those who are most certain they're immune to the cognitive harms of protracted faux-discussion with an #LLM are much like those who are most certain they can never be taken in by a cult, an extremist group, or a long-con fraud.
The more certain you are that it can't happen to you, the more susceptible you are, because of that certainty.

@deFractal @jenniferplusplus +1. Confirmation bias works both ways........ that is what is so dangerous about this stuff. If you know you're interacting with one, it's much easier. But if you don't... demons form.

@bms48 @jenniferplusplus Even if you know what you're interacting with: cognitive atrophy is an inevitable result of cognitive outsourcing. The brain, like the muscles and skeleton, is a use-it-or-lose-it system. The body recycles tissue which is disused.
Astronauts know full well the atrophy which results from weightlessness, and some occurs even despite the deliberate work they put into its mitigation.

@hipsterelectron 🧠 can't get colonized if I'm doing the colonizing

I'm being informed this is not true

Oh, and if you think these things are powerful but dangerous tools, only to be used with care by specially qualified people, why the _fuck_ are you recruiting for them?!

@jenniferplusplus Are there any arguments against using voice models for privacy?

@jlou I'm not the person, and this is not the post, for you to try "but my use case is special"
You don't need my blessing. Insisting that you get it anyway is not helping anything

@jenniferplusplus I've had people argue to me that "yes, there's social, environmental, economical, etc costs now, but if we keep using AI it's going to put pressure on someone to come up with a solution to everything."
These are the kind of people that look at the narcissist's prayer and think "yeah, that seems like a good plan!"
