    AN INTERSECTIONAL PSA:

    so yesterday i mused about the gender-bending 1980s whilst watching #TOTP and Ben posted this Grace Jones album cover.

    Ms Jones genius lies in understandibg how to exploit the white gaze. Ms Jones may be androgynous to YOU but NOT to a Black Carib like me.

    growing up, Ms. Jones was unmistakably the hallmark of BLACK CARIB FEMININITY. as a Black Carib, there is no fucking way you could misgender Ms Jones.

    THIS IS WHY #TRANSPHOBIA IS AT IT’S CORE RACIST.

      @blogdiva

      I always viewed her as hyper feminine. Goddess level presence and appearance made a strong impression on me.

        Ms Grace Jones actually made an appearance on the #WordUp show i was watching. it was her #TOTP performance of SLAVE TO THE RYTHM.

        you could say she took a moment of cheeky lip-synching & turned it into performance art; BUT! from a negra point of view, it was her very loud & clear FUCK YOU to that very racist, very misgendering white gaze.

        because, THAT is why Ms Jones is revolutionary. her femininity IS her Negritude. he showed us how to never apologize for being Black Women.

          @blogdiva that’s really interesting. Thanks for sharing. It’s not a perspective I was aware of.

            @blogdiva
            This was mostly illegible to me — I could sense the presence of some kind of “gender fuck you” in that classic album cover, but could’t decode it at all — and I appreciate your post so so much for just laying this out with such clarity. Thank you.

            You decoding, and then that last sentence…! Transphobia is normative, including race-normative, and thus is a bigotry that is a Trojan Horse for other bigotries…right. Right. Of course. Light bulb moment.

              BBC described her as a carpet yet, her outfit is a little fashion masterpiece.

              she’s in an outfit that harks back to the 1920s flapper era ―and which the disco era called back all the time.

              most folks would think the kimono coat screams ISSEY MIYAKE. it is though the classic shape of Paul Poiret’s 1920s cocoon coat.

              Poiret influenced Balenciaga, Miyake and a still little known African American fashion designer, PATRICK KELLY

              i think Ms Jones is wearing Kelly.
