@AmyZenunim I am curious. If you could go back to that moment with specifically the vocabulary, no knowledge of what he would become . . . what would you have told him?

@OchotonidKnight probably something about the history of capitalism, the myth of barter, something about the inherent value of labour, I don't know. just anything other than shutting down in the face of his new gospel.

I knew Chris Olah from a hackerspace I was apart of 15 years ago.

he was a cool dude. believed in social justice. taught me a lot about math. we had good times together.

then he had one summer at the Thiel Fellowship.

after that, he wasn't the same.

@owen he's a billionaire, Owen. a fully-fledged TESCREAL pusher billionaire writing letters to the pope about how the pope's god is soon to be obsolete. Peter Thiel's hand-picked protege, and if I'm reading the papers right, the guy who made LLMs feasible at all.

until this moment, in the back of my mind, I still considered him a friend. a misguided friend; that maybe one day, we could meet, and I could convince him of the errors of his ways.

but now, he's an archangel for his unborn god. it's as if he ceased to be human at all.

and so, he's dead to me.

for years, in conversation, I used him as an example of how effective the system is at indoctrination.

I didn't think he'd wind up a billionaire neck-deep in a cult trying to destroy the human race.

not like this, man. not like fucking this.

@AmyZenunim forgive me for a prying question, but I note that the Wikipedia article on Chris Olah (any relation to chemist George Olah? uh, nm that silly question) says he dropped out of college at age 18. was that a decision he made after the Thiel Fellowship thing?

@mxchara i don't remember the exact timeline, as it was so long ago, and I don't know the intimate details of his life

he was definitely out of school and working on other things when I met him. maybe he applied to the fellowship as a way to do something outside of school.

either way, I remember him going into the fellowship somewhat skeptical and wary, and coming out utterly radicalized.

@mxchara from what I've read, part of it is giving you "staff" and a truckload of money. basically, they give you a taste of being a rich billionaire fuck, and then groom you into positions of power from a young age.

@mxchara from what I've read, part of it is giving you "staff" and a truckload of money. basically, they give you a taste of being a rich billionaire fuck, and then groom you into positions of power from a young age.

until this moment, in the back of my mind, I still considered him a friend. a misguided friend; that maybe one day, we could meet, and I could convince him of the errors of his ways.

but now, he's an archangel for his unborn god. it's as if he ceased to be human at all.

and so, he's dead to me.
