#Proton #AI #LLM #AISlop After sending an inquiry to Proton support, I have been informed that "in order to remain efficient" they are trying "pilot programs" using LLMs to assist in coding their products.

@Retreival9096 I briefly played with Proton's Lumo too, and it's complete garbage, as expected. Spewed confidently wrong answers, the usual LLM bullshit.
I'm really fucking tired. I'd already migrated email to them a while ago from Google, which was a chore. Now I guess I'm going to have to do it again, to someone else. Someone else who will probably turn around and embrace LLM fuckery or some other fascist pivot.
And please don't come back at me with "host your own email". There's a limit to the cognitive load I want to merely exist in this digital hellscape. I'm almost to the point of saying fuck it and unplugging.
@sharpcheddargoblin @Retreival9096 this is exactly my situation (gmail to proton, a couple of years ago). i'm so tired of trying to do the right thing only to discover that it's a seemingly impossible task. i have no idea what to do/where to turn next.

I don't often ask for boosts, but I would like this to be as visible as it can.

What's the context? It seems you are refering to some post I can't see and I curiousMy communication style is poor. This is a new message I started, because a lot of people rely on Proton for a variety of identity protection products: VPN, secure email & calendar, etc.
And, in my opinion, their decision to use AI for coding makes their products more buggy and thus less secure.
As others have pointed out, there are other reasons not to trust Proton, including their CEO's politics.

@Retreival9096 I think you'll find that all actual software developers who have tried using LLMs as aid the last ~6 months agree that they are quite useful.
The people who claim differently are either 1) not actual developers or 2) haven't checked if their gut feelings agree with reality.
That said, I would most definitely not have an LLM write me a cryptographic library, but I'm also very certain Proton aren't either.
@troed I'm not going to argue a point where there is already a considerable body of evidence. Bye Bye!

@Retreival9096 @sharpcheddargoblin there must be some better options. just need the energy & will to find out.

lol. another anti-AI fanatic who is completely unable to handle their cognitive dissonance and just go direct to blocking.

@Retreival9096 do you have the exact wording and or screenshot of their reply? What was the question that you asked them or did you ask multiple questions?
yes, I'll attach that.

yes, I'll attach that.
I asked

I want to know what policies, if any, do you have around LLM contributions to your code base. Do you require, encourage, remain neutral, discourage, or prohibit LLM code in your products. If you have different policies for different products, please break out your answer by product.

Hi,
Thank you for waiting for us to get back to you, for your question we are always seeking to find the best tooling for our engineers to build our products in fast, efficient and secure ways. That includes the use of AI tools in the software development lifecycle. At the moment we are piloting its use in order to strike the right balance between speed & efficiency vs maintaining our high bar of code quality and the security of our products that you as our customers are expecting.
If you do have any further concerns or questions, please do contact us again.Kind regards,

@ozeng @Retreival9096 @kevpeirce
Their answer to your query was pretty vague. A chatbot is one thing - you don't have to use it. Using a tool to look for code bugs or check for missing documentation would be okay too. Integrating AI-written code into the software is quite another matter.

True. I assumed since my question regarded their code base, their response did too ... but that may not be true.

@kathimmel @Retreival9096 I have a Tuta account as well, at the time their spam management was not very good but I guess they've improved lately. Maybe they're worth switching to?

It sounds as though they didn't like to say, or hadn't really decided. Email software should be pretty cut and dried by now. I hope they don't mess it up.
I have a web site, so domain name and a mail server was part of the hosting package, but I have family members who use Proton mail and like it.

@sharpcheddargoblin @kathimmel @Retreival9096 I’ve been using Tuta for several months now and I’m quite satisfied. The spam filter is not perfect but it’s improving.
