The World Happiness Report for 2026 says passively consuming algorithmic social media hurts teens’ #mentalhealth with heavy use contributing to a drop in wellbeing among young people.
The report found that heavy social media use affects girls disproportionately and is associated with digital crimes such as sextortion and #cyberbullying, as well as higher rates of #depression and #anxiety.
