    On 18 April 1955, the world lost one of the greatest minds in history - Albert Einstein passed away in Princeton due to complications from the rupture of an abdominal aorta.

    Einstein refused surgery, saying - "I want to go when I want. It is tasteless to prolong life artificially. I have done my share; it is time to go. I will do it elegantly."

      @AkaSci

      As an old person, I have a lot of doubts that I have done enough.

      But when you've revolutionized pretty much everything with 2 ideas, you can spike the ball anytime you want.

        Albert Einstein Memorial in front of the National Academy of Sciences building in Washington DC.

        Photo taken last month. I thought the statue was looking more worn this visit.

          Aortic rupture (there is only one Aorta) at 76 is fairly lethal even this century, although great cleverness has been applied to it.

          In the UK the three main efforts to reduce deaths from it are by prevention and detection, firstly smokers basically don't get Aortic dilatation and rupture, unless they have Marfan Syndrome or suchlike, so reducing smoking will reduce it greatly, an abdo ultrasound scan at around 60 years age detects dilation, for surveillance; and elective replacement.

            @Photo55 @AkaSci In 1955 they weren’t likely to save him for very long, even with heroic effort. If he didn’t die on the table, he’d probably never wake up again. In 2026, the prognosis is still… really bad.

              Yes. Grafts were being hand-stitched from surgeons' nylon shirts.
              Sometimes successfully.
              Elective repairs are a great deal better now, but so are a lot of our 76 year-olds.
              Although efforts to reverse the latter improvements continue in various States.

                Wow!
                What a baller!

                Einstein looked death in the eye and said LETS DANCE!
