    Age verification laws means every child predator who can create a website or an app will know if they're interacting with a potential victim.

    And now, with vibecoding, literally EVERYONE can create a minimal website or app. These legislators are serving up victims on a silver platter.

    Here's all they'd have to do:

    * Create a chatbot in an app
    * Give users over 18 the normal chat bot
    * Give users under 18 a chat bot where they subtly give the user more manipulative responses.

    You can vibe code that now except right now, there's no to know with certainty how old the user is. With age verification, they know for sure who to target.

      @wwahammy Yeah... I sent basically that to my local reps.
      With these sorts of laws, anyone can make a website, app, whatever, get the age (or age bracket or whatever) check for it, identify potential victims automatically, and flag them as such - providing a "child friendly" version designed specifically to exploit those who were flagged as underage.
      It's such an obvious attack vector.

          @wwahammy Completely trivial.
          Might as well just make a public database of vulnerable children and give it to every one of Epstein's "friends"

            @miss_rodent I've been trying to come up with a clever slogan about it related to Epstein. Any thoughts?

                Just say that the law mandates “Epstein cookies” on web sites. That is completely wrong, but so inflammatory that news orgs will feel compelled to publish long explainers about what it really does and how that relates to child predators.

                    @inthehands @miss_rodent this honestly isn't that far from what originally came to mind for me a few weeks ago which was "Epstein headers". But that's because I was being too literal as an engineer. Epstein cookies is something average people would get.

                      @wwahammy @inthehands Yeah, "Epstein cookies" works I think.
                      It also kinda makes my skin crawl a little to type, which, seems appropriate in this circumstance.

                        @wwahammy Skip the age verification signal entirely, apply AI to the task of identifying the age of the person they're conversing with and adapt accordingly. AI's really good at that, and it'd let you target even those minors who've spoofed their age well enough to fool the age verification system.

                              @tknarr it works even better when it already knows you're a minor because the device told them.

                                    @wwahammy what i am personally worried about is the possible repurposing of these “child-friendly measures” for more extreme conditions (say, requiring ID to access the Internet in times of crises/wars, where any any action online will immediately be tied to your identity - how could that go wrong, right?).

                                    That’s what happened with Russian regulators: first they started blocking sites distributing CSAM, drug sales, torrent trackers, etc.), developed the infrastructure and then… well, now you can’t use the internet properly without a solid VPN or byeDPI instruments. I’d like to think the rest of the world would learn from our mistakes…

                                    p.s. I’m sure other people have pointed this out already, but i still wanted to share my thoughts on the matter.

I’d like to think the rest of the world would learn from our mistakes…

                                      p.s. I’m sure other people have pointed this out already, but i still wanted to share my thoughts on the matter.

                                      @lunacharskii I think it's a reasonable conclusion. I believe this will be exploited in certain US states to block kids access to information about LGBT people, abortion information and honest readings of history which acknowledge racism, sexism and other forms of oppression.

                                        @wwahammy Completely trivial.
                                        Might as well just make a public database of vulnerable children and give it to every one of Epstein's "friends"

                                        @miss_rodent @wwahammy considering the profile of the mega billionaires in the Epstein files (allegedly!), and the fact they own or control a lot of social media and corporations and their websites, this is not in the least surprising.

                                          Age verification laws means every child predator who can create a website or an app will know if they're interacting with a potential victim.

                                          And now, with vibecoding, literally EVERYONE can create a minimal website or app. These legislators are serving up victims on a silver platter.

                                          @wwahammy on the other hand, it would be less expensive for agents provocateurs to target the under-18 versions of everything.

                                          So actually, children will be learnt to exist in a social environment with higher percentage of spy actors, who just pretend they are like them to attract potential predators.

                                          What would possibly gone wrong with social environment, where high percentage of actors are either predators or predator hunters?
