We love seeing p2p in games. It should be in every multiplayer game, I think. The tools exist and there's no reason to make end-users port forward.

just surprised this is coming from microslop of all people.

Either its (a) an internal mojang hobby horse, or (b) realms is just losing them
      that much money

@AnarchoCatgirlism@cyberpunk.gay I always thought the only reason why they wouldn't have added it years ago is because they want people to pay for Realms.

There's no way Realms is losing them money, right? It's just a Minecraft server. It's not that costly to run.

@sodiboo@gaysex.cloud its expensive if you're an overworked vibe coder who's forced to use windows server and in-house minecraft hosting code

@AnarchoCatgirlism@cyberpunk.gay Actually, fair point, yeah. Most servers are some Spigot derivative with performance improvements. I guess Realms would be vanilla, and therefore less efficient.

But also, does it need to scale that much? Isn't Realms limited to just a dozen or so players?

@sodiboo@gaysex.cloud A dozen player server is about 8gb of RAM, I'd wager.

Think how many realms servers there must be. Minecraft is the biggest game in the world. Surely millions?

If I was a michaelsoft exec, those numbers would be making me sweat right about now

@AnarchoCatgirlism@cyberpunk.gay Okay so i checked the cost:
                  - You get 11 concurrent players max. (10 guests + the owner can always join even at capacity)
                  - It's $7.99 per month.

You could get a VPS capable of hosting a Minecraft server for 10 people for like $3-4 a month. It might not be the smoothest experience ever; but if you turn down the server-side render distance and simulation distance a bit, i'm sure you can get it feeling pretty good and running at a consistent tick rate.

Sure, Realms maybe isn't super profitable for them. I can get behind that. But there's no way they're
                  losing money on it.

@sodiboo @AnarchoCatgirlism playit.gg + old computer at home / main computer is also an option, it doesn't even involve port forwarding and there's no bandwidth limits

a friend of mine ran a community server on it with mods, there were no problems even with a good 10 players on, and within a month on the free plan he transferred over 300 GB

@lunya@sk.lunya.pet @AnarchoCatgirlism@cyberpunk.gay well yes but something like playit costs money to run and the old computer at home isn't free to acquire and still costs electricity. This is a super economic way to host one server at home, but to offer Realms as a product you will very quickly run out of old computers and need to buy or rent more hardware.

still though, there's no way they're losing money on it. i think they added P2P connectivity because it's genuinely useful and cool and not because it's better for their bottom line, at least in the short term.

@sodiboo @AnarchoCatgirlism playit's free plan only has 1 mc server limit, no bandwidth limits afaik

also p2p was added, but I think it relies on that one player who hosts the world to others which means when that player becomes unavailable for whatever reason, no one gets to enjoy minecraft
