Release 2026.05.06 is out on Codeberg, F-Droid, iOS, and soon on Google Play and brings a big new feature:
From this version onward, updating the map files of CoMaps is no longer tied to updating the app. Which means we can bring you fresh #openstreetMap based maps more often!
Read more about it on our website: https://www.comaps.app/news/2026-05-06/Release-2026.05.06-release-notes/
Any news on the live traffic feature?
-
@doc75 you won't have to update that often, you can keep the older maps.
But, we know that many of our users also use CoMaps for actively contributing to OpenStreetMap - and for them having fresher local maps helps making better contributions!
-
@soaproot @doc75 also for now it won't show that there's new maps available unless you manually check for them.
That's by design, as we promised we wouldn't do any internet connections without user consent - at some point in the future there'll likely be a opt-in for automatically checking for new maps in the background but for now it's all manual.

@voorstad still under active development, the latest development is here: https://codeberg.org/comaps/comaps/pulls/4200
So: No fixed timeline, but there's active work going on!

@jonassmith I know that it's something that's being talked about, but not in a concrete way.
Personally, I think it would potentially also shift a lot of computational burden onto end-user devices for the merging, which could be problematic for older devices. So it's a bit of a trade-off to consider!
@CoMaps @jonassmith
Ok, but it is more resource protecting, due to less traffic. Especially if you are (e.g. at a trip) requested to do it w/o cost free or flat rate connection and especially with roaming.
So I would be happy, if it will be a future 'opt in' feature. But this is a feature, which is not urgent.
But, You can ask the community here, what is the preference and usage.

@CoMaps a big thank you for this contribution to the app. It had already been a topic of discussion in the weeks leading up to the fork, and I’m glad you’ve implemented it ^^

@CoMaps@floss.social @doc75@pouet.chapril.org Exactly! extremely good move IMO.
