Holy fucking shit AI is causing heaps of problems in the botanical identification world. Northwest floral had an incredible id tool where you could type in various subspecies of a plant and it would give you side by side comparisons in minute details. They've turned it off because of ai bot scraping. Jepsons eflora now makes you take a math test to prove you are human. Kew went to blank pages, This is a fucking nightmare. Grass ID is hard, it can be incredibly confusing and now because of fucking AI my life has become harder. I am proud of botanical sites standing up to ai .... But shit #fuckAi

@geolaw @Coho if AI researchers were sharing datasets then this would reduce the load on websites

likewise if RAG for e.g. AI search results were optimized to use local caching rather than actually fetching the latest version of sites (it probably already does to a degree, but not sure how much...)

note that both of these are easily achievable within an academic context, but not a free market one

@Coho I don’t know if it’s related but Merlin is giving really bizarre suggestions on the photo bird ids lately. Things like suggesting a picture of a sparrow is a great blue heron or an American Woodcock.
