    Received today on a #postcard from #Bulgaria via @postcrossing. The "stamp" is just a slip of paper with the value written on it by hand, which is then stapled to the card. Does anyone know what the language is on the bottom line? #Romanian?

      @DrHyde @postcrossing It's french. If my pigeon french is correct it means "tax paid".

        @mart_brooks @postcrossing it certainly could be French - if it is, your schoolboy French is correct - but why on earth would the Bulgarian post office use French? The only requirement for text on stamps is that they must have text identifying the country of issue, or be Royal Mail stamps with the monarch's portrait. The latter is because we invented the things and the UPU grandfathered us into the regulations.

          @mart_brooks @postcrossing I guessed Romanian only because that's the geographically closest Romance language to Bulgaria.

            @DrHyde @postcrossing

            French pops up in all sorts of odd places. English is often described as being the lingua franca of the internet.

            Lingua franca meaning "French language".

            Maybe there's a world governning body for postal services and it's headquartered in some french speaking country.

              @mart_brooks @postcrossing the #UniversalPostalUnion (#UPU) is that body, but AFAIK there's no requirement for stamps (or anything else for that matter) to be in French.

                @DrHyde I found the following explanation that will probably make more sense to people with more stampy experience than me:

                "Taxe percue (pronounced TACKS-pair-SOO): An auxiliary marking (sometimes abbreviated "TP"). It is applied, usually by handstamp, to indicate that postage is prepaid. Taxe percue markings are often used instead of postage stamps as a matter of convenience. They are also used when postal rates change rapidly and stamps in useful rates are unavailable."

                  @thegiddystitcher @DrHyde And the Bulgarian above, platena tsena, is similarly something like "paid the price".

                      @DrHyde @mart_brooks @postcrossing official language of the Universal Postal Union is French, so it may be added here for good measure. English is an approved working language only.

                      Air Mail stickers often have Par Avion for the same reason.
