@eniko That really sums it up nicely doesn't it?
Not even that long ago everything just felt so fresh and neat. One thing after another after another, each feeling like it was the future and giving us something truly amazing, enjoyable, and even useful.
But all that has been subjugated. Now all that matters is making short term profits for those at the top no matter what. And since they're burning all the bridges and there is no long term plan, they keep having to burn more and more to compensate for the fact that they're destroying any possibility of a long term while still trying to keep profits going up.
Eventually we're all going to run out of bridges to stand on and all just because quarterly profit reports and bringing in VC investors are the most important things now.

@eniko Ban the stock market.

@eniko I feel like this is the view of technology that the media are working hard to sell, but that it is actually impossible in practice, unless you artificially narrow the definition of technology to fit that narrative. It's like the economists define technological progress by use of energy, which might seem reasonable when you live in that short blip of history when entire economy is based on fossil fuels and you identify economic growth with progress.

@eniko previously, it was a vehicle for exploiting labour and moving money upward.

@eniko Technology has been a vehicle for parting investors from their capital since the venture capital was invented.

@eniko If you can, read this book. It's a wonderfully self-ignorant description of one of the biggest dot-com disasters: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/69799.Boo_Hoo
In it, people who want to make a fashion web store go and ask venture capitalists for money, and they answer that you're asking for too little. That they should ask for 10x more. Or 100x more. So they did. And burned it all, in a fabulous chaotic mess. The store barely even launched.

@eniko Sure, that's because (impersonal) you explicitly gave it away to them.
