Musings on #gender and mind uploads, or purely digital persons, as one does.

Let's assume we get functioning "uploads". For all practical purposes, a "mind" (whatever that actually is) running on different hardware.

If they have something like VR for a self representation, would #trans folks feel more comfortable, or would cis folks feel less so, if their form were easily malleable?

Would that introduce a sense of dysphoria without a VR "body" at all?

Then what do constructs do with gender?

@pseudonym I honestly think that (maybe absurdly so when looking at transphobic ppl) cis folks would not only appreciate the option, but actively enjoy it.

There's this mythos that hetero cis males create female avatars in videogames to have a 24/7 view on da booty. Thats BS imo or at least doesn't reflect my own experience, nor the experience of friends that I talked to: the absolute majority reported, that they can >feel< like a fierce (or soft/cute) female character.

So whatever constitutes >feel< in that regard, its as if there is some sort of longing, not only towards the object, but >to be< that object.

      To me thats fascinating.

@AwkwardTuring @pseudonym I can confirm this. In my gaming I almost always play as a female; a fierce female character who kicks everyone's ass.

@TazPoltorak @pseudonym right? One could create a character with the same physique - therefore the same skeleton regarding animations - and even voice, but still, I assume, one would pick the female avatar.

@AwkwardTuring @pseudonym tbh I didn't expect so many other people to do this. I always thought it was just my thing 🙂

@pseudonym @AwkwardTuring Kind of funny you mention that mythos because I personally didn't play with female avatars in 3rd person games for the longest time because I didn't want to look at their butts for hours. It always felt too male-gazey to me in most games, which I would say is not really that surprising given how male-dominated in general gaming is.

@pseudonym I think everyone would have fun with it.

Not just gender. Thought experiments (but they need CW to work - see next posts)

                  @pseudonym
You already know the answers to these questions.

Do you have fairy wings - gossamer like an insect but shaped like a butterfly?

                  Dragonfly wings?

An insect's carapace to hide them in and protect them?

                  Feathered wings like a bird?

What color(s) are the feathers? Are they different underneath?

Skin wings like a bat or like a flying squirrel or like a dragon? What color(s)?

Do they replace your arms like a bird, or are they extra limbs controlled by new shoulder or back muscles, or are they flaps between your arms and legs like a wingsuit?

Now imagine what you could do with a VR persona.
