#Matrix users, how do you use Spaces?

#Matrix users, how do you use Spaces? What value do you get from them? I am soliciting feedback for designing the Spaces UX in #RelayApp https://github.com/subpop/Relay/discussions/53

@subpop Two major uses: "Room lists" for various topics. Another is access control to set of publicly joinable rooms that require membership in a space.
What I dislike in Element is that it tries to auto-guess the "root" space in the left pane and often gets it wrong. Spaces form a network, not a hierarchy. It should be possible for user to manually pin spaces in the pane.
Also it would be nice to have a tree-like overview of spaces network.

@cos Woah. So can Spaces be in Spaces?

I ignore them completely.
My Matrix use is basically an instance just for family members. Occasionally I'll venture out to the support page to some FOSS project or game. It's rare enough though that I don't really feel like I'm in enough Matrix rooms to warrant any real value from spaces.

@Blort I don't use spaces much myself either, which is a large part of why I am soliciting feedback on how people use them.

@subpop yes. They can form a recursive tree, but more generally they are a network that can have cyclic relationships.

@subpop using them as a parent structure and to consolidate all rooms under one umbrella (https://ztfr.eu/matrix)

@subpop I use Matrix primarily as an information repository.
Spaces are broad categories - Film, Games, Technical. Within each space a room is the subject. In a room a comment becomes a specific topic with the actual content in threads.
Example :
Space: Tech
Room: Proxmox
Room: Netbird
Room: Docker
Topic: ### import/export image ###
Thread reply: All notes and comments related to that topic -
