    @kde Can I ask what "AI powered tools" you have in #Kdenlive and why you don't take a stand against them instead? It's really hypocritical of an organization dedicated to #FLOSS to be making use of LLMs in any form, even "open source" ones that don't share their training data. I wasn't happy when #PeerTube did it, but at least they only use it for subtitle creation (still not good but at least it's not generative) and they didn't plaster the buzzword on their website as a point of pride.
    I'll be really disappointed if I find out the best #FLOSS video editor is supporting stuff like this.

      @cloudskater

      We can answer the first question:

      1. Yes, automatic captioning (not subtitling; that's different more on that below), which is deemed "good" because it helps creators make videos that are more accessible to people with trouble hearing.

      It also facilitates reaching larger audiences, as it simplifies subtitling in different languages, although we do not include this feature (automatic translations) in @kdenlive . It is up to the filmmaker to choose how to do that.

        2. Tracking, which is the process of following the position of an object, figure or any other moving element over several frames. This is a really old technology and pre-dates the LLM craze thing. It is also non-generative.

          3. Automatic masking, which allows you to separate a moving figure from the background. It substitutes rotoscoping , which required the filmmaker to draw nodes over the figure, frame by frame. A long, tedious, painful process. This feature is also non-generative.

          All these tools are optional, must be installed separately and run locally, and, as they are non-generative, do not actually create anything new—or steal from someone else, to be more precise.

            Whether this constitutes "hypocrisy" or it's just "adding features to make film editors' tasks slightly easier" is up to you to decide.

              @kde@floss.social @cloudskater@bark.lgbt @kdenlive@floss.social I feel like the main issue here is messaging. yes kdenlive has some legitimate uses for AI-adjacent tools, but calling it "AI-powered" makes it seem like it's chasing the harmful LLMs trends.

                @kde @kdenlive I see. I greatly appreciate the explanation and apologize for how hostile my post may have come off. I've become quite sensitive to the idea of AI slop invading the spaces and programs people use to avoid them, myself very much included.

                That said, would you consider clarifying this kind of thing more upfront? Having the bullet point listed like that really gives the wrong impression. I searched for a while before making this post and correct me if I'm wrong but I couldn't find the information as it's been detailed here. Maybe I didn't ender the right keywords in your manual or something.

                  @_r @kde @kdenlive absolutely agreed. AI has only become a bad word because of billionaire chuds. Now to be clear, I still don't like it or PeerTube using things like Whisper because the training data is still very likely unethical and it shouldn't be supported, but I understand its in the name of accessiblity and at the very least thats not as bad. I just hope they're willing to swap it for a truly open and verifiably not-scummy version sometime down the line lol

                    We agree and we agree with many of your objections. AI has become a synonym of tech irresponsibility, greed and exploitation, like crypto was before it.

                    The difference is AI existed before the current craze and pursued legitimate goals. That is still happening in some areas of AI research and ignoring all uses of AI would be throwing the baby out with the bath water.
