sooooo if i was to play with a lil site for "fediverse classifieds" that advertised different skillshare options what do u think the categories are
-
@inherentlee i can say that after manually retyping all those categories ("detect text in image" didn't work), the ampersand no longer means anything to my eyes
@ranjit it's Just A Squiggle
-
@mycrowgirl @artcollisions maybe it's *just* diy maybe we keep it simple idk
@inherentlee I suspect using “repair” somewhere in the category might help it find better traction especially here on Fedi with the whole “right to repair” movement.
I dunno. Labels and binaries always chafe me, but librarian habits die hard

- technology (bc duh)
- art (edit probably arts/crafts)
- literature and history? social sciences? (edit: literature and writing is probably it's own, then..........social sciences? science and history?)
- interpersonal and life (thinking like ND tactics or things like that? idk?)
(edit to add...
- food and drink
- animals and the outdoors
- home improvement and diy OR JUST diy)i want pretty big overarching categories, not narrow.....but idk what level to aim at. they obv won't be balanced because we are so tech heavy lol
so far (there is almost nothing so far lol) it's a dead simple structure that just wants a fedi handle, title, category, and blurb for any individual listing. no email or other contact methods, just fedi
i'll probably also ask folks for a TTL on their listings...
@inherentlee hmm
- computer touching
- grass touching
- fixing stuff
- arts & crafts
- book learnin' -

@inherentlee would a boost help, or do you prefer to keep this more low key “thinking out loud”? I don’t want replies to escape containment if that would overload the process

-
@Moss obv some are house pets but i want to avoid narrowing things too much
@inherentlee I can see what you mean, but/and to my mind there’s a difference between “nature” and “home life”. Both include “how to get along with animals”, but one is like “how to identify a hawk” and one is “how to introduce a new kitten”. So maybe “animals” is a usefully broad category, but “nature/outdoors” is too broad?

@mycrowgirl eh i'm fine either way, it's more of a thinking out loud thing and doesn't need to get big but i did actually consider whether i wanted this followers only this time lmao and decided it didn't need to be

@Moss broad is actually pretty good at this stage because i don't expect a lot of volume, so i would totally group hawks and kittens in the same category imo!

@Moss if for some odd reason this becomes an actual thing i can do mroe category work, but with too many categories it will look super sparse.

@inherentlee @Moss don't group hawks and kittens in the same room tho!!!!

@inherentlee that’s what subheaders are for 🤪 @nev

i think the actual question is:
if you were going to offer a skillshare topic, what would it be?
@inherentlee Scientific paper* editing, particularly for non-native English speakers if it would help them avoid the use of AI. In field-ish is obviously better, but I can probably do a decent job on most of chemistry & biology. I've done beta/proofing for fiction too, but that's much more personal style preference oriented and also I don't like getting side-swiped with unexpected sex scene in a "general" rated fic, so I'd probably be more selective in taking those projects on.
*we don't have too many junior folks around here, but this includes papers and things for internal advancement like qualifying exams if they can give me a copy of guidelines and maybe some example of what a good one in their department was

@SRLevine hm heard! i think the literature/writing/editing category is appropriate there though i am still trying to figure out the ideal name for that one. i think i need all 3 words which honestly is bugging me because a lot of other categories are two words
-

# Megafauna

@ranjit @inherentlee after all, kittens don’t wear pants!

@Moss the two top categories in your taxonomy:
# Things that wear pants
# Things that don't wear pants -

@inherentlee I like those categories a lot (I'd include home improvement with DIY since there are some things that are kinda DIY but I think people think of as home improvement and not DIY if that makes sense).
I think this is an awesome idea and would be a super cool thing to have exist (and would deff participate myself!)
