I keep seeing articles like this, about how people choosing to drink less is hurting bars and restaurants, and it's almost always framed as people, especially younger generations, don't like to drink.

@DonChacale I have tried some options and I didn't find any of them to be that good
@MLE_online
i will be experimenting with this one next... fyi

They had the best burritos when I lived there.@MLE_online
Now I know why you associated them with Del Taco. They're gone but sort of revived. -

They never seem to bring up the fact that a cocktail is like $20 now unless you go to a really divey dive bar. It's the same kind of reporting they on how no one goes to the movies anymore. It's always about changing habits, and never that movie tickets just cost a lot now.
@MLE_online Reminds me of a headline from The Onion awhile back. Something like: Local bar supports the sober community by offering $16 mocktails.
-
@ljrk No, I like drinking lol.
@MLE_online Yes, and it ruins people's lives. I'm not advocating for a ban, but pretending less people drinking is something inherently bad is very much outside of the "responsibly dealing with drugs" category.
-
There are limits, and if I can buy two bottles of vodka from the grocery store for the price of a single cocktail, I'm going to opt to not have that cocktail most of the time
@MLE_online Same. I don't think one old-fashioned should cost more than a bottle of bourbon.

@MLE_online you know what else they don’t mention? How despite this very well known trend restaurants still refuse to offer non-alcoholic cocktail options. Teetotalers like myself often get stuck with options like soda that frankly I’d rather just buy cheaper and drink at home since there’s nothing fun about it.
I think almost every restaurant I go to with non-alcoholic cocktails/unique drinks I have purchased something.

@derekheld that's seems like a different story than this one
-
@gneilyo Right? Rent for business spaces is crazy high in a lot of cities now, but you never hear them making a stink about that in public
@MLE_online @gneilyo I read that in Dallas rent includes some percentage of the restaurants take. That is completely insane to me. Like why should the rent increase because you're more successful? Restaurants should put that breakdown on the bill.

@ljrk if you think people should drink less, that's fine, but it's a different issue than what i am talking about

Stop reading the New York Times, please. But, yes. -

@MLE_online "Economy Struggles to Survive as Billionaires Continue to Drink its Blood" headline was not in the top copilot suggestions, somehow.

https://www.zdnet.com/article/comaps-review-google-maps-alternative/@DonChacale @MLE_online comaps is great but is also nowhere near as useful as Google maps. I have to use comaps plus a transit app for train/bus schedules and I don't get live traffic. none of that is a super huge problem for me but it is reallllllllly annoying. Like I've gone a long way towards degoogling, to the point of having my own server to replace Photos. even so I still have Maps

@MLE_online I was thinking of quitting drinking, but the picture of all the liquor gave me inspiration. Thank you and now i will continue to be alcoholic

@disorderlyf glad that works for you! gummies give me anxiety, and im not the only one with that issue
@MLE_online For what it's worth, you have my sympathy. More seriously, the point of my post was that for a substantial portion of the population, there's a solution for the same or lower price with less harmful side effects than alcohol. For those who can't use THC, and for those who can and don't, in fairness, there are also ways to destress that don't involve drugs. Those ways are also typically cheaper and less potentially harmful than alcohol.

@disorderlyf If they're not putting alcohol in their drinks, they should be much, much cheaper, but those mocktails are expensive as hell, too. They just charge way too much for all of it

@MLE_online Apparently it's always our responsibility to help save these businesses and not the business's responsibility to not rip us off.

@charlesdelavalleepoussin@mastodon.social @MLE_online non-alcoholic drinks are also super trendy right now. I don’t have any hard stats on this but 5 years ago I never heard of anyone drinking nonalcoholic beer, and it didn’t seem to be sold anywhere. Whereas now I see non-alcoholic beers placed in prominent shelves in grocery stores and I know people who actually like to drink them.
Money is ofc tight for everyone rn but I think there’s more than just that going on here
-

@MLE_online I definitely think the non-alcohol drinks shouldn't be the same price, since short of it being something like a bottle of beer where you have to get it without ahead of time, it's literally cheaper to make and requires slightly less labour.
