    hi fedi! does anyone happen to know how to acquire a nice witch hat?

    (i.e. people who sell them, would be willing to make them, or maybe even just instructions I can follow myself)

    I desperately need a witch hat to complete my character, especially given the upcoming talks I'll be giving '

    by "nice" I mean something that I could wear daily, something that brings joy, something that's well made, looks nice up close, and will last forever. (I can find a lot of bad hats, but what's the point...)

    reposts are appreciated, mrrrow,,,

    @wffl@im-in.space

    Etsy has a good selection of which some might hit your requirements?

      @wffl I was going to suggest these:
      https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/4386398778/butterfly-witch-hat-halloween-black-hat
      (my daughter has one and it is spectacular) but then you said one to wear every day. Now all I have is Terry Pratchett's Nanny Ogg describing her hat in Witches Abroad:

      "It's got willow reinforcing all the way up to the point and eighteen pockets inside. Can stop a blow with a hammer, this hat."

        @wffl I made this hat in about 3 hours … I will share materials and construction in later post (probably in alt text as I can put a lot in there 😹)

          @wffl Yes I do make them, you can choose the color, the size, the material (if it's possible to make a hat out of it)

            @wffl forgive the underside… I was in a hurry and the piece of green fabric was too small 😿 ! If I took my time with it I would have stitched much slower and had an even piece to cover the underside

              @wffl https://www.ravelry.com/projects/yavien/a-practical-witch-hat i knit and felted mine (from 100% wool yarn) and its really nice and sturdy and thanks to random increases whimsily wobbly. however, it is thick and very warm bc its felted wool

                      @Sellerie @wffl can't recommend mine unfortunately: the decorations are hotglued into place.

                      Looks pretty, is probably stable, but still feels like shoddy craftsmanship

                        @wffl A form I cut out of cardboard to measure my head. As you can see my original cutout (the disk in the center) was a bit small, the resulting hole is slightly bigger and not a perfect oval!
                        I would try this on your head repeatedly and make adjustments, it should be somewhat snug, as you can always trim a little bit off 🩷
                        Use it like a stencil on your brim fabric (I cut my brim out first and then tried to center the stencil onto the “circle” I cut out.

                          @wffl
                          This was the easiest way to make the “point” . I measured the hole in the crown to be sure I had enough fabric for the base of the “cone” , I then made a general guess as to how long I wanted the “cone” laid my fabric on my iron-on batting, (on a corner 😉) took a string with a pencil and marked a curve. (Ironing the fabric also makes this step easier ). Then you just cut and sew the two straight sides together!

                            @wffl The trickiest part was getting the wire to stay on the brim edge and sewing the crown onto the brim. I did cut extra fabric to go over the edge of the brim and glued it there. I think if I sewed it down with one small (as in straight probably a long stitch so it wouldn’t be too obvious) and then sewed the point on then the underside fabric.

                              @wffl because when you cut the hole for your head on the brim (don’t cut it as an oval just make cuts like a pie, it’ll give you something more to hold onto) you now have to fit the point into this hole, remember this is fabric just laid and glued on the brim form, there’s already a hole of that brim form.
                              If I were to do it again, I’d sew the point on first then sew the underside fabric (I basically did it all at once 😹) This is another reason why it’s a bit sloppy on the stitching 😹

                                @wffl here is a picture of what I did with the “point” of the hat to give it some shape. It’s a piece of the same wire wedged into a “loose stitch” that extends into the brim and up into the point

                                  @wffl having a small ribbon to “mask” any silly stitch work is always a good idea 😹 especially if it’s your first time making a hat 😹
                                  (Let me know if you have any questions about the process 🩷😹)

                                    hi fedi! does anyone happen to know how to acquire a nice witch hat?

                                    (i.e. people who sell them, would be willing to make them, or maybe even just instructions I can follow myself)
