This #blizzard in #Boston is the real deal. I just spent 2½ hours outside with my shovel, snowblower, and ice chipper, clearing our rear stairs, the part of the patio that needs to be cleared for snowblower access, and the driveway, which had a lot of pre-blizzard ice that I needed to chop up. I didn't even make it to starting on the sidewalk or cars before the snowblower batteries died. I guess I'll be out there again for another pass when the batteries are recharged.

It was weird rushing away from Springfield MA to Springfield VT yesterday to
get away from the storm 🙂

I hope you have time and space to shovel, because then it can be kinda
nice, but i'd never say that to someone that had to be somewhere.

Another 2+ hours outside, touching up our rear steps, patio, and driveway, clearing our front porch and steps and sidewalk, clearing the street in front of our neighbor's driveway he's letting us park in (including the snowbank left by the plows), clearing off the minivan parked in that driveway, and clearing enough snow on either side of it in the driveway to be able to open the doors on at least one side.

The snowblower covered the intake and exhaust pipes for our furnace and boiler, and in the process of clearing the snow out of them I broke the plastic grating on one, so that's something I'm going to need to fix after the snow melts.
Here are some photos, though honestly they don't do justice to the magnitude of the snow.

One thing I know for sure is that when you spend 4+ hours doing manual labor (and I'm not even done, I'll be out there at least one more time to clear off the other car and redo everything I've already done because the snow is still falling), you can pretty much eat whatever the fuck you want that day without worrying about whether you're going to burn off those calories.
Remember on "Bonanza" how the Cartwright family would sit at the table eating crazy breakfasts that looked like dinner? That.

@mem_somerville @jik I just had to explain to a bunch of California kids about how many calories you burn in the snow doing physical activity, lol... not sure if they believed me.

@mem_somerville I wish. I seem to be at the stage in my life where there is pretty much nothing I can do that will guarantee a good night of sleep. But who knows, maybe tonight will be the night.

@ai6yr @mem_somerville @jik OMG yes. Try being 5 feet tall, breaking trail on a snowshoe trip with 3 feet of fresh snow. My usual 1/2 a PB sandwich did not cut it at all. I picked up a pizza on the way home & ate over half of it when I usually eat only 2 pieces. If I got exercise like that every day, I'd be in amazing shape.

@Nshrubs @ai6yr @mem_somerville @jik Three feet of snow? Were you like on top of the snow trying to not sink in or were you three feet down, fighting the whole thickness of it? Either way sounds... yikes... That would indeed be a workout.

Another 2+ hours outside shoveling out the second car, clearing the storm drain, and touching up everything I did before.
Still having trouble capturing photos which convey the magnitude of the storm, but here are a couple more attempts.

When I shovel out a car on the street, I really shovel out the car and the space. And every bit of snow I move gives into somebody's yard, none of it goes into a pile on the street or sidewalk or blocking other cars. Because I'm not an asshole.
I had to actually move the car out of the space to dig out the space and then put the car back.
This is why I feel zero guilt about using a space-saver for a couple days after the storm.

When I went out to shovel the third time I discovered that the owner of the car in front of ours had cleaned the snow off her car and piled it all in the middle of the street. I pointed out to her that when the plow came by it was going to plow all that snow up against the cars on the other side of the street and then they were going to have to move it all again. I left it to her to draw the obvious conclusion that this was a dick move.

And now 800mg of ibuprofen and I are going to lie in bed and hope that my back and elbow feel better in the morning than they do now.
