We have opened formal proceedings against Shein under the DSA. Key areas of investigation:

🔹The sale of illegal products, including content that could constitute child sexual abuse material
🔹The risks linked to the addictive design of the service, including giving consumers points or rewards for engagement
🔹The transparency of the recommender systems used to propose content and products to users

We will now carry out an in-depth investigation.

Wait, what the fuck did they sell? I thought Shein only sold dirt-cheap clothing. WTF?!?

          > including giving consumers points or rewards for engagement

That just feels hypercritical (looking at e.g. Lidl, Rewe, Payback, ...)

          > The transparency of the recommender systems used to propose content and products to users

Also feels hypercritical, here, not even Otto, Kaufland, ... do that in their online stores

@EUCommission Many things are wrong with Shein and Temu. Luckily, I have never shopped there. Personally, I think there should be a pan-European alternative to Amazon. If someone is to write a book, and use that platform to distribute it, whether in paperback or in digital format (KDP), Amazon gets a big cut out of the earnings. And there is really no reason why they should be able to extract that kind of free rent from us. (1/2)

@EUCommission Therefore I think there should be a pan-European alternative for it to distribute books, and knowledge in other forms. (The same argument can be made for e-learning platforms such as Udemy or Skillshare). 2/2
