Again, I hope they don't send him another one, but my point is, we would probably still be having this conversation if they hadn't, we'd simply be discussing either hyprland or openbsd.
@komali_2 @soapdog @Foxboron @smilingdemon @alatiera
Good ! That is one step, it's progress and is valued. This is the kind of steps that builds a better world. The road is long, you can't teleport there, so you have to start somewhere.
Something more important to consider is that the projects in question are moving. If there is enough pressure, they can move in the right direction as well, and not be under consideration. -

@alatiera @frameworkcomputer is soooo neutral -

@komali_2 @soapdog @Foxboron @smilingdemon @alatiera I honestly had assume that they wouldn't send him another one atleast... Yet they just proved that wrong

@alatiera If it weren't for their active politics I would be looking at this in all seriousness (I bought a FW13 before we knew, thankfully on an "it'll do for a good few years even if I don't get a CPU upgrade out of it" basis). Like, it does both the major things I wanted improved and I suspect has been engineered to allow further work on the original's RAM and SSD cooling problems.
Long live the competition, I guess.

Plus their upstream Linux work and donations to various distros and WMs

@thibaultmol @soapdog @Foxboron @smilingdemon @alatiera they sent a laptop any WM with any popularity because they want more people buying their laptops I guess.
I think it's a fair question whether interacting with someone in that way constitutes a vouching for that person's ideology. I think probably not, I get sandwiches from bodegas even though half the bodega guys are flat earthers and all of them have dumb political beliefs

@komali_2 @Foxboron @smilingdemon @alatiera @soapdog this is only showing that right to repair is soluble in capitalism, ie not really progress. Progress is going against not just capitalism but all domination. If right to repair is a viable path for success inside capitalism, do you think that capitalism has reduced its grip ? -

@komali_2 @soapdog @Foxboron @smilingdemon @alatiera i mean, I feel like there's a difference between the owner of a company and the people working on the company....
There's a sushi place nearby where I actively don't go to because the owner is a far-right guy -
@reflex @Foxboron @soapdog @smilingdemon @alatiera Eh, well, hard to avoid PoS like DHH in FOSS world. Baby, bathwater, etc.
I believe good actors are held to higher standards than bad ones (the other manufacturers), which creates selection pressure against being good. So I balance the good framework does and find it to be a good buy.
I understand that some people aren't down for that, I'm not sure what kind of laptop you use but I'm glad you found one that matches your values.
@komali_2 @Foxboron@chaos.social @soapdog @smilingdemon @alatiera I'm unaware of any other laptop brand repeatedly giving money to active fascists and nazis, even after it being called out, but you do you.

@alatiera wait whats wrong with framework? -
@soapdog @alatiera they do send out to other distros, and given Ormachy wasn't on the list they said they had sent pre-relase laptops too. I therefore suspect they had intended for this to go under the radar which is even worse. Not only have they not actually listened, the lesson they seem to have learned is "just don't let people know". It's all so sad and frustrating and oh so easily avoidable by Framework.
@smilingdemon @soapdog @alatiera Damm I was hopeful when I didn't see it on the list.
-
@soapdog @alatiera To be absolutely fucking clear, they are not oblivious. They are intentionally signalling the far right community. Omarchy is just a set of configs, no special hardware support required. It's a complete waste of resources to donate anything to DHH. Sending it to the Arch team would indirectly support Omarchy.
This is about making it clear who they support in general.
-
@FuturisticRobert @soapdog @alatiera Omarchy is just a customized config of Arch. It requires no special support, if your hardware works with Arch it'll work with Omarchy. Sending DHH hardware to validate Omarchy is a non-sequitur.
They are using this as a way to market to the fascists and nazis he cultivates. Buying advertising on the far right more or less.

@FuturisticRobert @soapdog @alatiera Honestly at this point I believe Framework does want to market to fascists. I think they believe it is a viable market. That is why they continue to market themselves via DHH, purposefully including a ModRetro in their announce video yesterday, etc. They are signaling who they want to do business with, intentionally.
