📋 SURVEY FOR PEOPLE ON THE AUTISM SPECTRUM

Do you feel that, because you’re on the autism spectrum, you often find yourself in conflict with others?

Personally, I hate conflict, but it seems to me that, because of my autism, it tends to come up quite often in my life.

Feel free to share your experiences in the comments.

I’d also appreciate a boost to get a larger sample size. Thank you! 🙏

Ironically I find the opposite (putting me in conflict with this post!) because I'm forever trying to find ways to fit in. It means I work hard to be many things to many people. I find conflict exhausting and the few times I find myself in situations where I am forced to confront it, it sort of short-circuits my brain and takes me a day or so to recover. I lose all of my higher masking processes and revert to a sort of standby mode state. Low functionality. Or a bit like that.

@autismunicorn @autistics I find that while I work hard to avoid conflict (even backing down when I know I’m right), conflict has an ability to find me just fine. 😢

@autismunicorn Can you define conflict for me? I think I probably have 200 conflicts per day *in my head*, but because I am conflict-avoidant I just avoid people and do not say anything. Is that yes or no on the poll?

@autismunicorn Yes I had a lot of conflicts in work settings. Trying less now to make persons understand my POV have made life easier. Some people don't want to understand. They want others to obey.

@autismunicorn @autistics while I did have a lifetime of conflict when I was younger I notice now I tend to just instinctively avoid anyone I would be in conflict with. Most of the time the people I have issues with I dont want in my life anyway, so I just don't keep them around. Anyone else knows me well enough to communicate in good faith. 🤷🏼‍♂️

                @autismunicorn @autistics

I don't like to be seen. For me, conflict or even simple errors expose me or put me under the spotlight. I am highly conscious of even simple public errors, like not getting a key in a lock quickly to open a door.

Even if I'm certain of a fact, I will recheck it constantly.

My also autistic mother is a master of avoiding conflict, even though she is constantly reading it. Female presentation.

@autismunicorn @TheBreadmonkey @autistics I put no because conflict wasn’t defined clearly enough for me to choose anything but no. There are a lot of misunderstandings but no fights.

I marked yes. But realistically it should be both. In so far as knowing that my values and the way I need to exist is more likely to cause conflict, even though it's mostly others with me, I have learnt to avoid the sort of situations where it's more likely to occur and the people who are most likely to cause it.
Oh, and give far less of a toss about the opinions of others and especially of those I don't value or are not a part of my world.

@autismunicorn @autistics I answered yes, however, I don't feel I'm in conflict with other people. I feel other people are often trying to create conflict without there being a need for conflict

I didn't vote, I just clicked see results because to me it's both yes and no.
I learned very early to not get into conflict and to resolve it but I had to learn this because I knew (without knowing about autism at first) that I was not like others. I'm more into prevention (but I think it's not only because of autism, my type/personality explain that + personal experiences)
also conflict is a bit vague, what exactly are we talking about?

@autismunicorn Yes, which is why I tend to keep to myself and say little or nothing at all.

Socializing is super exhausting, even online sometimes.

@autismunicorn @autistics I'm also never sure how much is actual conflict vs a simple misunderstanding. I take things VERY literally and personally.

Do you feel that, because you’re on the autism spectrum, you often find yourself in conflict with others?

Personally, I hate conflict, but it seems to me that, because of my autism, it tends to come up quite often in my life.

@autismunicorn @autistics allists might get into just the same amount of conflict, the difference is that they don't fret as much over it. (and perhaps they should)

@veroalgoz @autismunicorn @autistics Reminded me of this post I saw yesterday: https://mastodon.nzoss.nz/@strypey/116512846452699522 (I haven't linked to another post before, so I hope it works!). It's nice to know that it's not just me. Lots of people feel the way we feel

Not on purpose but I can't stand when someone does or says something wrong (factually wrong) and no one corrects them. I can't stop myself from correcting them. And then the discussions start ...
Also because I ask a lot of questions sometimes, especially when I don't understand something, people think I'm trying to make an argument out of everything.
