    DC has a curfew for people under 18 - they have to be off the street by 11pm, and, in certain neighborhoods, 8pm.

    Now, I'm at the age where I should be yelling at kids to get off my lawn, and I get that groups of teenagers are prone to getting into trouble (and can make grownups uncomfortable even when they don't). But it still rubs me the wrong way.

    Kids should be held accountable for their actual conduct, not pre-judged merely for being young.

    That said, all of you - regardless of age - are invited to get the hell off my lawn.

      @mattblaze
      11pm you might convince me was a misguided attempt at improving sleep patterns, but 8pm? Why are underage people treated like they're not people 😭

      Can they drive? What if they're at a friend's place? This is so bizarre to me.

            @mattblaze I agree with the entire post, 8pm is especially egregious. However, maybe this is just my inner oldness showing, but I don't think anything good happens after 11pm.

            If it does, I won't be awake for it. 😂

                  @mattblaze Having just made a brief run to the store at 8:30p on a Saturday, I found myself pretty annoyed with the Youths that were out being loud for no reason.

                  But that is just being in public, and the sad fact that Target and Walmart are what amount to Third Spaces these days.

                    @mattblaze Does the law have an explicit exception for protests? It seems to me one has a reasonable 1st amendment argument for being out past curfew as a protest of the curfew

                      Being loud is something the US is at least as incoherent about as being young

                          @mattblaze I don't think Toronto has any sort of curfew. On the other hand, at the moment, thanks to the destruction caused by last fall's water-line replacement, I don't have a lawn. Get the hell off my dirt!

                                    @foxxtrot @mattblaze Around here, it's Baskin Robbins and Starbucks, apparently. I don't often go to either, but because I was out the other day, stopped by Starbucks to see if they had any (free) used coffee grounds for the garden, and it was PACKED with teenagers.

                                      @mattblaze
                                      People are going to argue with a teen curfew, and you know they will. Think we agree that it's an unnecessarily demeaning thing to do to kids and probably statistically unsupportable as a deterrent to the behavior it's supposed to address. Lose on all fronts.

                                      Someone's going to argue anyway. I take solace that your responses are better than most, but you've got to know it's coming.

                                        @noplasticshower Our motto is actually "Taxation Without Representation", at least according to the license plates.

                                          @mattblaze when I was a teenager I was often on the street at 10 or 11 at night

                                          because I was taking night classes at community college
