Can the AI haters give it a rest already?

@quanin @Meepercat If you don't regard giving someone a camera that will collect sensitive images without their consent and distribute them without their consent, especially doing it to people who have little other recourse other than to put up with it as falling within that definition, I am not the one with the problem. That is an abuse of power. That is an abuse of trust. That is an abuse of the other person's vulnerability and relative lack of power.
@JustinMac84 @Meepercat First of all, I am not attacking you. You will absolutely know it if I am. Second, nowhere is anyone's sensitive images being collected without their consent from their own camera, unless the app that's doing it is legitimately spyware, and at that point you've got bigger problems. Even TikTok doesn't do that. Please provide an actual citation of a legitimate app actually doing that.

@quanin @Meepercat You clearly didn't read the article she had such an extreme reaction to. In it, it records instances of Meta Glasses literally recording people not their owner as long as 5 minutes after users left the room. Same article references Siri eavesdropping. So spyware. But I would argue they are just the most extreme cases. Sharing the naked pictures I may choose to share with my partner on *my* device *without my consent* is also...

@quanin @Meepercat I strongly maintain, abuse. Those are images I have chosen to take and share within strict parameters. For a company to take it upon itself to do what it likes with them is violation.

@JustinMac84 @Meepercat And if that is happening, and can be proven, you'll have a case. But Siri eves dropping? Solveable by turning that part of Siri off. Takes 5 seconds, if that bothers you. There are more than a few people who are okay with that and do not see it as abuse. I don't see it as abuse but also don't have a use for it, so it's off. You can't turn that off with Alexa, so I don't own one. I still don't see it as abuse, I just don't have a use for it.

@JustinMac84 @quanin @Meepercat where is this happening?
@J3317 If you look back through the thread, you will see I sent Kitty a link. The info is in that article. Since it forms a pattern of behaviour with other malpractice by tech companies, particularly Meta, I am wholeheartedly convinced, but, as I added, that represents an extreme example, even to share audio, video, images or data a user voluntarily collects beyond the parameter of their consent, I would argue, is abuse, esp if they know about it and feel powerless to escape
-
@JustinMac84 @quanin @Meepercat where is this happening?
@J3317 I would share the link again, but I closed the window and can't easily find it. None of what I say is to detract from any other abuse Kitty or anyone else may have suffered though. If you're pushed from one form into another and prefer the latter form though, that doesn't make the latter form any less abuse.

@DavidGoldfield Thank you. The same people though that condemn AI on social media which is for some reason the sexy thing to do in tech circles now probably use it to have 3000 cat pictures described, and you know what? That’s great, they should, but they shouldn’t talk out of both sides of their mouth.
@technocounselor @DavidGoldfield I like AI. I ask Gemini and Alexa stuff all the time. And really appreciat the describing and reading it can do.

Can the AI haters give it a rest already? Yes, I know there are concerns, but as a person with a disability, if I didn’t use every tool that was out there because I had concerns about it, I wouldn’t use anything. All this AI hatred is just cutting off our nose to spite our face.
@technocounselor I absolutely agree with you Allison. I was very leary about using AI at first, but I've been able to do so many things with it that have made my life so much easier, and have helped me learn so much. I think AI should always be used as a tule, but it can be used for some pretty awesome things.

@technocounselor they've got to have something to bitch about. I wonder how long it's going to be before we have people coming up with 21st century variations on the old tall tales where giants beat machines on particular jobs and died doing it, like John Henry, for instance.

@maerlynofmiria @technocounselor I absolutely agree with this, its why I do my best to use AI in a responsible way to make things easier for me, not to do work for me necessarily, if I can use AI to make my work more efficient based on what I give it to do and it does it well, than it only helps me to use it. Yes, there are concerns, but AI is the future, so I might as well embrace it.

@LeonianUniverse @technocounselor I so can't stand the AI haters. They come out wit more alarmist crap than I've heard on the net since AQnon got started in 2017. One thing I use AI for is novel revision. Yes, sometimes I have to stop it from drifting, but it works pretty well, particularly when adding visual elements I'm not really equipped to add. One thing I wish it wouldn't do is put modern clipped cinnimatic paragraph and sentence structure into an epic fantasy novel lol.

@maerlynofmiria @technocounselor Yeah, they really do like to fear-monger people in to thinking AI will kill us all and destroy the world because one person decided to use AI to create music or whatever. Its just super wild to me.

@maerlynofmiria Right? I hear that shit all the time and my response to that is, if that's the way you see it, than make better #music! Its a market economy, if people like my music over your music and mine was made with the help of #AI, that's not my fault, do better at making music and make it more attractive to people and they will buy it more as everyone has the choice to buy music or anything that they want based on a number of factors, if people find AI music more attractive than your music, that's on them, not on the #creators of the music. hell, AI music is my music, its my ideas, my concepts, my lyrics, my style, I don't tell the AI to copy artists and there work or do anything that would suggest anything like that in the slightest, its all me, and if people want to buy it or not is there choice, not me causing harm just because you can't get your music on the #market, want to complain, complain to yourself for not being able to market as well as I do, not on me for making my music in the first place.

@LeonianUniverse @technocounselor Goodness yes! Like especially sighted people, if they can't fix the world to work for us, they should say absolutely nothing when we take any advantage we can to make things more comfortable or even excellent for us. Especially developers and artists. I'm kinda getting ready to unfollow people like that. Like I've made a few apps accessible for me, made some Emacs stuff work for me, and that's with vibe coding. Like I've said before, Termux wouldn't have been made more accessible without AI. And I'm just starting. I should look into more open source Android apps to make more accessible. Like why not? Why would we limit ourselves? We've been limited all our lives. I'd trade a few bottles of water for some accessible apps. Or an accessible world.

@pixelate @technocounselor absolutely, sighted people had years, no, decades to help improve access for us in various ways but chose not to, now they get mad because we use AI to make our lives better? That's bullshit, if we can use AI to help make things accessible we previously couldn't use, that's just us using our time wisely instead of waiting and hoping sighted people will eventually think of us and get around to it when they want some sort of metal for making our lives better in various ways, whether that be making a game accessible or making an experience accessible for us, its now in our hands and that's a way better experience than anything a sighted person would eventually think to provide.

I think I’ll maintain the likely unpopular position that we need some fear-mongering just to slightly push back against the wild rush by every institution on Earth to ram it up our collective noses at 500 mph. whether we asked or not.
In a better world, where the brokers and money people had basic ethics, I think there’d be less need for fear.
