    I had to change how I garden as with climate change my original plantings did not work as well anymore. I planted a lot more woody plants with deep roots such as fruit trees, fruit bushes and canes. They provide shade and don`t need watering. I also planted perennial veg such as rhubarb and perennial kale as well as many perennial flowers for wildlife. This means less watering, more shelter, and leaves for mulching. I also have more birds now. #climatechange #gardening

      @MyWildlifeAllotment

      My HOA has many antiquated rules about property maintenance. No clothes lines allowed. No compost piles allowed. Lawns must be 4 inches or LESS. Happily, they don't say anything about trees, so my 1/3 acre now has 27 trees. The shade is killing the lawn, which when dead, says below 4 inches-- a happy side-effect. A few are ornamentals, but the rest are native shade trees.

        @killick Lucky you they did not say anything about trees 🙂 I would have planted lots as well. They are so good for wildlife and in a hot summer it is much nicer to be under trees. People already said to me on hot summer days that it is so nice to have the shade with my trees, I always think then that these people just have to plant some trees too!

          My county has a program. They will plant 10' tall native shade trees in your yard, business, place of worship, etc. for free. My house only had room for 3 when I learned of the program. My HOA received 58 trees on community property. One neighbor was given 8. treemontgomery.org

            And even though you can have trees for free, I have some neighbors who have planted nothing at all in 10 years. They have the same rectangle of grass they started with.

              @killick Yes a shame. Some people don`t like trees as they are too messy in their view, or grow too big, cast too much shade etc. People also get rid of trees too easily, we had new neighbours and the first thing they did was cut the nice rowan tree down in their front garden, on the allotment someone new took a plot on and the first thing they did was cut down the nice apple tree which was on their plot. Makes me nearly cry when I see this.

                I can't argue that trees are not messy-- I have to wonder how my birches are still standing after all the downed sticks I picked up this spring. One of the three little pigs thanked me for collecting them before he took them.
