Bernie has been repeating, almost verbatim, Dario Amodei's talking points, for a while now, even quote tweeting him. Amodei positions Anthropic as the ethical alternative to OpenAI just like OpenAI positioned itself as the ethical alternative to Google in 2015 and everyone ate it up. This was an article from then, the headline says that Muskrat, Thiel, Altman + friends founded an "altruistic AI venture" πŸ™„

@timnitGebru I was really disappointed to hear Bernie in some interview a while back play the doomer card. All I can think of is who has been pouring poison in his ear. As he talked I realized it was the Amodei gang and it was further proof that one should not get too attached to popular figures.

@GeoffWozniak @timnitGebru This is what I think is happening to lots of would-be resistance leaders. Capitalist propaganda throughout the Twitterverse seeping into public figures' thinking cause they don't think it possible to leave (or even *sometimes* deviate from!) posting on mainstream platforms - E.g., Yanis Varoufakis 😞

It's so disappointing to see politicians who should be calling out Trump BS and the simultaneous AI crowd that works to support him so oblivious to the hyperbole. The world and USA needs a younger generation of politicians that are more tech savvy and yet cynical about the industry and its players

As an old guy getting played, it's clear Bernie's judgment and ability to help proactive moves against Republicans and their oligarchs has eroded or he has been compromised.

Bernie's video is what I would call #trojan_ai

@craigduncan @timnitGebru That Bernie -Claude monstrosity crossed my feed and all I could do was shake my head at the gullibility of boomers.

@timnitGebru cancer kills you in stages. First it starts hovering up all the resources to grow at the cost of everything else, then it puts pressure on other systems making it hard for them to function (markets / governments)
It then either crushes everything else to the point of killing its host and itself
Or it fails leaving catastrophic damage to the host. (Bubble collapse)

Even if the magical black box machine god manages infinite exponential growth as promised (which I doubt) it kills you either directly or by consuming your ecosystem. A child can see linear systems are by definition one way.

The total lack of regulation, the misappropriation of resources (intellectual and other) and the push to militarize by dumping more resources into it bodes so very well.

@curiously @timnitGebru I get you but please note there's a famous quote saying "cancer is not a metaphor". But the analogy stands.

I don't remember who said this, but it's like telling you to buy Camels instead of Marlboros while claiming to fight tobacco companies. If any politician parrots talking points of a CEO on a funding round, even on the harms of AI systems, you should be worried.

Remember when Altman schmoozed them and newspapers had headlines of him "begging" to be regulated and hailing him as an Oppenheimer figure who is so worried about his own creation πŸ™„?

That was just last year! https://time.com/7267797/ai-leaders-oppenheimer-moment-musk-altman/.

@timnitGebru I've been using "leaving Facebook for Instagram" for this same thing.

Doesn't matter if they're younger if they're still lining up at the same feeding trough as the old guard. It would be nice to think that being more tech savvy would lead to more compassion, but I don't see it happening. Also, Sanders probably smells tech money for his home state, just as he did with the MIC after using anti-war locals to launch his poltical career back in the day.

@timnitGebru I saw the clip and found it weird that he talked to the LLM is if it was a person and had actual knowledge and analytical abilities. Also the answers were so perfect that it didn't feel genuine. It would be easier to write a script of the conversation beforehand, which is what we're seeing in that clip.

@leanderlindahl Exactly! I don't believe that he prompted any LLM to give these answers exactly how he wanted them!
This video is staged too professionally, the dialogue is like pure theatre. I suppose the script came from his best public relations writers. It's an ad for him and I don't like this way of making politics (even if the ideas may be good). Too much manipulation, no transparence.
