      @anon_opin@mastodon.social whom should he pay tax to? to the queen?

      Monarchy is a stupid system, but it's the one that's around in GB. The king giving money the king is stupid.

      otoh there's probably tons other rich people around that aren't paying nearly enough taxes too.

        @dat @anon_opin Your information is a bit out of date, it hasn't worked like that since 1760.

          @dat

          Taxes paid by the monarch go to the treasury, not back to the monarch.

            @anon_opin There is no inheritance tax because Charles doesn't really own most of it.

            The crown estate (all the royal lands and castles and racecourses and whatnot) which generate about a billion pounds a year were traded off to the government in 1760. The monarch of the day gets a 12% cut to keep doing royal things, the treasury keeps the rest.

            While I am, in theory, against the idea of kings, I am fully behind a 88% tax on billionaires so I think this is quite a reasonable arrangement.

              @anon_opin the bugger made hundreds of thousands of pounds a year while Duke of Cornwall due to an archaic law which allowed him to claim the estates of anyone who died without a will, regardless of whether there were clear heirs. Obviously a grifter like that wouldn’t pay his due when it came to his own inheritance.
