    Raising teenagers is always interesting. Why, for example, wouldn't a pot lid be a better and more environmental option than plastic wrap for a watermelon?

      @sunnydeveloper

      Another idea: put cut fruit cut-side down on a plate.

        That's how god intended it. Why else would the sizes of melon and pot lid match so well?

          @forse @bjb @sunnydeveloper tried that, but then the good stuff leaks out. Lid is The Way.

                @sunnydeveloper we have reusable rubber lids in various sizes for different bowls, fruits or vegetables. Nothing large enough for a watermelon unfortunately.

                  Yes we refrigerate cut melons face down on plates, works great. Of course we eat them pretty fast too! Not much time to dry out.

                  Onions and tomatoes go face down in plastic tubs without lids.

                    @sunnydeveloper I love it when they do that! Though the youngest of mine will put plastic wrap over a big bowl of grapes. She doesn’t quite understand the reasons for wrapping things i’m afraid.

                      @sunnydeveloper
                      We always inverted the cut melon onto a plate.
                      Parents have been doing this since the 60s.

                      Granted it took up more shelf space on the fridge shelf, so I like this idea, either with a pan lid, or an inverted plate.

                          @sunnydeveloper Very convenient because now you can bring the watermelon straight from the fridge to the stove.

                              @forse @sunnydeveloper

                              I was thinking:

                              - if fruit is too big for plate, pot lid might be required
                              - but, doing without pot lid might be inconvenient, I have a lot of plates so plates are handy when they fit.

                              Re the other person's comment, yes I also use food containers to store cut fruit, when a plate is too big. Convenient for juicy things too as they have deep sides.

                              Anyway, it is very encouraging to hear about all these ways to avoid plastic!
                              Go us!

                                  @Maker_of_Things @sunnydeveloper I go inverted plate because then things can be stacked on top of it. But more often if I have melon it's cut up and put in a square container, again for the Tetris of it all.
