      But here's the thing: Canadians have gone #ElbowsUp because we don't like being pushed around, and because we don't like being threatened. Prime Minister Carney applauds that effort. I applaud it too.

        But we need government to do its part. This video was shared on American social media network YouTube. Why? We have video networks at home. We have the CBC. We have government Web sites. This is a post by our government, for our citizens. It should be hosted here.

          I want to see our leaders do their part and post on Canadian social network services. Federation gives them reach to other countries, but keeps them rooted here.

              I know it's easier to post on American social media services. But Canadians have been doing a lot of things that are harder just to support Canadian businesses and keep our dollars on this side of the border. Government can do things that are a little harder, too.

                  @evan I think your point is a good one, but this example is untrue. The current President notably does use an American social network (which he owns personally) for his announcements; I'd say to an unhealthy degree. The previous presidents who served while social media existed also used American social networks extensively; particularly for campaigning, but also as a part of their announcement strategy.

                  Anyway, just a note. I think your argument is good, but this example doesn't support it.

                      @evan @ilinamorato I'm confused. I won't defend today's Tw*tter as a good network, but is it no longer big?

                      I don't personally track user count on any network, so I'm happy to be schooled here... and would love to see the Big Tw*t demoted!

                        It may well make sense to you in California that it was a direct message, but the world does not actually revolve around the US or California. Sometimes we aren't speaking to you.

                        The world knows that Carly Simon's biggest hit could have been written about pretty much any American.

                        The need for Canada to have its own platforms to communicate is *entirely* to avoid this American-centred perspective. @evan

                            I think Canadians have an opportunity here to further push more use of the Fediverse to Canadian Officials: it's still a large, international network, but Canadians can control the servers thet Canadians connect on, meaning it's not vulnerable to potential whims of some other country's spiraling government.

                                    @wendinoakland Federation lets us host and own our own networks and stay connected to the world. You can see videos from our Canadian servers using the Web. On federated social networks, you can follow Canadians with accounts on servers hosted in Canada and owned and operated by Canadian entities. We don't have to use American services to connect with Americans.

                                      @evan I’m aware and happily follow Canadian users on their local servers. I’d made a snide retort regarding PM Carney’s choice to use an American social medium with an enormous reach, suggesting that he could politely reach all of us yanks easily. The other commenter seemed to take me too seriously by far, missing the fun entirely.
