Watching a Youtube video rn about moving away from #Discord to something #FOSS (#Matrix 's #Element ) . It's a great video... BUT, it really underlines some big issues with attitudes toward #UX and #UI in #tech circles.

He said: "you can't customise your profile with kawai pictures and emojis, but who gives a crap about that".

I get it. Priorities should be on privacy. But the fact is: this stuff IS important to people. Also, why _cant_ we have that? (cont)

Like, I don't see why #FOSS #UX should be excluded from whimsy and delight. One of the things I'm trying to incorperate into my FOSS projects is exactly that: a delightful user experience that people WANT to keep coming back for.

Why shouldn't we give people the ability to add cool banners and colors to their profiles? If it incresaes the network effect to a federated, FOSS chat apps advantage, then I think that's worth considering!

        > Why shouldn't we give people the ability to add cool banners and colors to their profiles?

I guess it comes down to the fact that proprietary tools need to make money, therefore they cater more to the desires of their audience.

Whereas #FOSS tools are made with love by (often) a single developer who has their idea of what it should be. And if people don't like it, "fork it".

@QueerMatters This is Element sucking specifically. Which is why most furries I've seen who care about this don't recommend it (we care a lot about personal representation and expression).

@QueerMatters This! So many times THIS!

Way too often, when discussing the #UX of #FOSS software with highly technical proponents of the latter, the attitude tends to be, "The CLI works fine, so what's the problem?”, “I don't really care for that feature, so why should others?", etc.

And of course, that eternal favorite of non-coders: “Stop complaining. It's open source. Just add it!”

In contrast, a user-friendly product with a meaningful, powerful feature set simply speaks for itself.

somebody has to pay it somehow and there are barely enough resources to to build a good foundation

@herzenschein @QueerMatters just saying: in #FluffyChat, you can set an avatar, and "Display Name" - which can include emojis. In #DeltaChat - which I prefer to #Matrix by a country mile - you get the same, plus a "Bio" field. That Bio field could, say, have a link in it, to your fabulous personal furry blog.

BTW: #Signal , in comparison, has an "About" field, almost exactly the same as DeltaChat's "Bio" field (where a personal link would also go). So in this respect, DeltaChat is no worse than Signal for the level of personalization.

@normplum @QueerMatters For some people, FOSS is like art. The consumer does not get to decide what is to be served. The producer offers by choice, not by demand.
