@CharlotteEowyn It is 1777. You are the diplomat and knight d'Eon. The King of France, by decree, assigns you a female gender in order to put an end to the debate on this subject. Transitioning is new and experimental

@solastalcycle@masto.bike @CharlotteEowyn@chaosfem.tw Now I finally know what started the French Revolution - the one that celebrates Fraternité but not Sororité... is it really Égalité then?

@divVerent @CharlotteEowyn You must discover one of our local deities! Olympe de Gouges, who was behind the Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female Citizen in 1791 . As you can imagine, it was a huge success with male politicians in 1791, just as it is in 2026.

It is 222 A.D. You are the transgender Empress Elagabalus, "call me not a man for I am a woman". Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1776. You are "Public Universal Friend", a transmasculine Quaker. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1906. You are Karl M. Baer, a trans man undergoing sex reassignment. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1930. You are Lili Elbe. Transitioning is new and experimental. (to be fair you did get a uterus transplant.)

It is 1966. You are in Compton's Cafeteria with a bunch of other trans people when the owners call the cops to throw you all out. You riot. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1969. You are Marsha "pay it no mind" Johnson. You are in a mob-run gay bar when the cops attack. You throw a brick. There is a bit of a scuffle. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 2026. You are a transgender adult or child listening to the NYT and British Guardian claim this is the first generation anyone has tried transitioning in. Transitioning is new and experimental.

@CharlotteEowyn it's 1938. You are Michael Dillon. You start experimenting with the effects of T on yourself. Your collegues out you to your parents and you run away to sea. You will later get the first phalloplasty and become a buddhist monk. Your poetry is awful. Transitioning is new and experimental.

@CharlotteEowyn it's the early 1600s, you are Antonio de Erauso, an infamous former nun who ran away from the convent and then lived as a man and made a career in the Spanish navy, had violent encounters with other men that almost always ended in the death of these men, had affairs with lots of women and when finally confronted with the authorities for some of these murders they were so surprised you were assigned female at birth and also an "intact virgin" that a bishop decided to pardon you for all your crimes and said you were "one of the most notable people in the world". Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1865. You are Doctor James Barry, stealth transgender man and former Inspector General for the British army. You leave notice that upon your death your body must not be examined. This is not followed, and a media circus follows with a shocking gender reveal. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1876. You are author Marc/Marie de Montifaud. You "crossdress" as a man when visiting the library for research, use the names Marc and Marie interchangably, and your pronouns are known by multiple people to be she/he. Transitioning is new and experimental.

It is 1880. You are known mononymously as the decadent author Rachilde. You delight in presenting publicly as sometimes a man, sometimes a woman, sometimes in between. You joyfully describe yourself as "androgynous". Transitioning is new and experimental.

The year is 2026, you are me. Held off chemically transitioning because you want a more androgenious/feminine appearance after 30+ years of trying to just keep yourself from being too masculine. An engineer who is now lied about and threatened by social media misinformation. Transitioning is new and experimental they say while you have access to historical and scientific evidence to the contrary.

@dhfir I usually don't assume trans<masc or femme> connotate gender, only direction. Like transfem enbys are still transfem?transmasc enbys are still transmasc? Edited for clarity. It's different for everyone.

@CharlotteEowyn I mean I understand your point but from what I've heard Public Universal Friend transitioned more in the direction of a biblically accurate angel than anything related to the paltry limitations of human flesh.

@aphyr @CharlotteEowyn yep was gonna comment on that part too. had some people get really pissy about being corrected on that before though, because apparently the facts are less important than sticking to the established narrative. which I find kinda disrespectful to the people involved.

@elexia @aphyr supposedly she herself told multiple different versions of the events, but whether she showed up early or halfway into it, she was there on the front lines, as witnessed by numerous people.

@CharlotteEowyn It is 2017. Cait comes out. I try to explore ways to transition. And a therapist says no. Too many trans sucides in sweden. No indication is given out. Too new and experimental.

It is 2019. Germany becomes woke like never before. People come out in troves. Mental health is important like never before. A therapist gives me an indication. Still: Too new and experimental.

It is 2023. Self ID comes to Germany. People discuss conscription. … no trans voice are heard.

@CharlotteEowyn It is 2023. A judge determines that trans healthcare is not covered. We are back at: It is too new and experimental. Trans people get more bureacracy. And people discuss phony cass retorts and ban HRT.

Post pandemic brought a new kind of fascism to Germany. Two trans people were injured that badly that one has consequences her entire life long. Another trans man died in Munster. Hate crime protection is too new and “antifreedom”.

@cygnathreadbare @CharlotteEowyn Ah, excellent, I was going to bring up Antonio de Erauso if no one else had. I went to the library looking for books about Basques, and this fascinating life story was what I found.

@hi_cial @CharlotteEowyn I don't think this is Johnson trying to shirk responsibility--she was fairly up-front about her activism and life in general. See 2:15 in her interview here:

@Willowbriar @CharlotteEowyn I'd never heard of Rachilde before so I looked them up. Their Wikipedia article is fucking *wild* so far.

"She was unwanted by her parents and received less affection from them than did the family's pet monkey, who was even granted such social graces as a seat at the table."

                                          That's the third paragraph!
