@North@chaos.social it happened twice in a row, from two different people!

(I had been hunting for vintage camera lenses on ebay and the ones from Japan were cheap as dirt, even with international shipping)

eBay packages as shipped from different regions:

China - ePacket, no packing slip, item miraculously undamaged

Eastern Bloc - World's flimsiest cardboard box, newspaper packing, item got wet at some point

USA - Cardboard box damaged to an improbable degree, bubble wrap and chunks of foam, packing slip generated by some Pitney-Bowes owned software service, "please rate 5 stars"

Japan - Meticulously wrapped, packing slip, hand-written thank you note, origami crane.

@North Lately I've been getting hand-written notes in ebay orders from US sellers. The last one said "thank you thank you thank you for your order!" in big cursive letters. I feel like a lot of small independent american businesses are suffering right now, and buying from them makes a bigger difference than it used to.

@aud I just ordered 4 model kits from different sellers in Japan and I'm very excited to see if this trend continues.

@Andres4NY I think that's entirely true. I have received handwritten notes from US sellers, but it seems to kind of depend on what sector they're in. I know that when I ocasionally sell things, I at least try to hand-write a "Thank you" on the packing slip.

@North Or maybe I'm buying from unemployed or underemployed americans for whom ebay as a side hustle is keeping their families fed? Either way, huge difference over the past year imo.

@North I think you forgot a few things for the Japanese package: an extra layer of packaging, under which there is an additional layer of packing, under which, for some reason, exists yet another layer of packaging

@OctaviaConAmore @Canageek @North oh, it happened in Germany too (from Amazon): plastic packaging, around massive bubblewrap, around more plastic packaging. So secure! Inside: a plastic bowl or some silly thing. 🤦‍♀️

@North @fancysandwiches currently living in Jordan, and I have restrictions on what I can get by mail via American government channels so frequently have stuff mailed to my local address.

This post is remarkably accurate (that said most of my US based packages come un-damaged), but the handwritten note with the origami crane from Japan? Yuuup

I once ordered some clothing item From AliExpress and after leaving 3 or 4 stars snd description why i got a phone call from the seller explaining why it was like it was, i forget the details. We ended up chatting -- in their excellent english -- about daily life here and there and in the end, i did change my review.

@North@chaos.social ebay packages from Japan sometimes come with candy and other freebies in my experience. I also got some free Haribo gummies from a German ebay seller once.
