@DavidGoldfield @technocounselor Unless things go catestrophically wrong, LLMs are here to stay in one form or another. There are some significant concerns for creativity, cognetive decline, loss of skills, etc.—not to mention the major environmental cost. There are certainly benefits,especially for disabled people. that said, we'll never know if the benefits outweigh the costs.

@DavidGoldfield @technocounselor I'm actually not going to stop the critics from criticizing since we're likely to learn more and examine things more closely if those critics make cogent arguments. I'm deeply concerned though about artists and writers who are losing their livelihoods because of the huge swoth of what is, in essence, intellectual property theft.

Can the AI haters give it a rest already? Yes, I know there are concerns, but as a person with a disability, if I didn’t use every tool that was out there because I had concerns about it, I wouldn’t use anything. All this AI hatred is just cutting off our nose to spite our face.
@technocounselor Agreed! I see the whole AI hatred as a humanity problem not an AI problem. People need to blame the thing though rather than shift the responsibility or blame onto the person. That’s always been our problem as a society.

The same people though that condemn AI on social media which is for some reason the sexy thing to do in tech circles now probably use it to have 3000 cat pictures described, and you know what? That’s great, they should, but they shouldn’t talk out of both sides of their mouth.

@ppatel I love the homage to the other AAC, but maybe we make it something like AIAC to not confuse people. I like it though. It warms the cockles of my plain language loving heart. Smiley

@technocounselor Absolutely agreed with you here. AI has done a lot for me that I previously could never have done on my own. I'm grateful that it exists.

@technocounselor It's not AI that most people I've heard this from hate. It's the fact people insist AI can and should be used for everything everywhere. There's a time and a place. It's a tool, not a support system and not a replacement for people.

@technocounselor What I don't get is not using it because of your concerns (general you). Like yes, you're not contributing to the problem, but someone else will take your place without a second's thought, so where is the actual reduction of net harm? If you choose not to use it for moral or philosophical reasons, then don't make a spectacle of it. Being vocal about it is a public performance at best and a showing of privilege at worst, unless I'm over-simplifying and missing something obvious?

@technocounselor @LeonianUniverse I'd just like to respectfully remind you and anyone who says this that, having genuine concerns about the uses AI will be put to and the privacy nightmare it currently is, doesn't mean people hate it. The two are not mutually exclusive. I will keep speaking out about AI concerns as long as I have the technology and breath to do so. If that makes me an AI hater, that's a judgement call everyone is free to make. But it is not true that I hate AI. That is too strong a statement.

There is absolutely no question that AI has had positive impacts on my life. Every time I have Be My Eyes describe a picture I’ve taken, be it a mystery can from the pantry, a mystery bag from the freezer, or what a mole looks like on my face in case I need to be concerned, I thank my lucky stars that doing things like this is possible. Also, I will admit that I’ve had more than a bit of fun posing questions to Chat GPT. But then there’s the other hand, and it’s a rather huge hand. AI has some potential very real impacts on employment. We are seeing the impact of this in our own household as I type this. Sarah works as a transcriber for JBI. She is proficient in Hebrew Braille, which is a very specialized skill. She learned that JBI is working on implementing AI to do functions of the transcription work that she has always done. In essence, this will turn her into simply a stenographer, at least in many situations. She is afraid that ultimately they’ll decide that they really don’t need a human transcriber at all, and I think that is a legitimate fear. Never mind that AI will never ever do any job as well as a human ever could. All this to say, there are definitely two sides to this coin. It is possible to appreciate what AI can do for us, while at the same time being mindful of the negative connotations it brings with it. (1/2)

@Thumper1964 @technocounselor @LeonianUniverse I use AI for image descriptions, or have. Doubt I will be doing that in future since Be My Eyes has partnered with Meta, and I'm not sure who has access to that description data. And i do think Sarah's concerns are real. We're already seeing less available jobs in the blindness community, and though people talk about retraining, my question always is, retraining for what? Big tech's goal and that of corporations, I feel, is to replace every human with AI tools. Like it or not, I see this happening.
For me personally, i will turn off Apple Intelligence when I have a phone that has the capability, and I hope I do not ever lose the ability to turn such things off. I don't want it. People should have the choice, and it shouldn't be forced on anyone, and neither should Face ID.

@quanin On that we agree, but there are people who just beat this notion into the ground, and after a while it’s like OK we get it.
@technocounselor @quanin On one hand I don’t want to see more guard rails go up. On the other I do. I’ve witnessed someone I was once very close to literally go insane and also burn down all human relationships due to using a particular AI stack as their friend, therapist and support system. It’s scary shit to witness. But even with that I’d never want to see AI go away exactly. But after what I’ve personally seen and experienced with this person, I can see the real dangers of human misuse.
