Thinking back old consoles, I had already forgotten just how much the "arcade quality games" tried to be a thing and how much it never really was until many years later. I think it was when I first saw Crazy Taxi on a Dreamcast that I could agree that you could call it a "arcade quality" port.
You folk have any memories of really harsh disappointments when playing arcade ports on a home console or some hidden gems?
No cause crazy taxi was one of the first games I played.

@apzpins The first arcade quality games I saw were on the Atari 2600, but that's only because I never saw any first generations consoles (which had arcade quality ports/clones of Pong). The Atari 2600 had arcade quality ports of various early Atari arcade games, but it just couldn't handle Space Invaders.
I think Space Invaders was when arcade hardware really pulled away from what affordable home consoles could pull off.
Even so, some home ports stood out, like Wizard of Wor on the C64.
@apzpins Of course, the Neo Geo achieved arcade quality via the most obvious and expensive way you'd think.
Aside from that, though, there were some excellent ports, such as Forgotten Worlds on the Turbo Duo.
But for really affordable and widely available consoles, it was really the Sega Saturn that brought it, with extremely good ports of 2D games like X-Men vs Streetfighter, Pocket Fighter, Dungeons and Dragons.

@apzpins I mean.. Any Pac, Centipede, BurgerTime or even Frogger ports are never as good as the arcade. Golden Axe is a rare older one that I think translated well. But not a lot else
standup cabs ftw!I played Pacman off one of those direct plug into the tv things and on my PS1 and liked it better cause wasnt at an arcade… >.>

@apzpins fire sale prices at a time when Japanese Saturn games were kinda peaking.
So, you could pick up a Saturn and many games from a Blockbuster fire sale for like $50, mod it for imports, and pick up new high quality ports of games that the Playstation simply couldn't handle.

I was definitely not someone playing too much that wasn’t any game with a wheel at the arcade. And people generally lose if its two player to me in a racing game. That’s what ate my quarters. And it also guards you from people and extra sounds to sit there.

@Energetic_Nova @apzpins okay the plug into the TV one, I have one of those too (I'm a bit of a Pac fanatic haha) - but yeah, those are better. Wasn't it on NES too, I think? That one was.. kinda okay. I do love the later 3D ones too haha

My mom who was a pacman arcade player only liked the plug into the tv one. Its her fave.

@Energetic_Nova @apzpins I guess Diablo counts as RPG, which is the reason I set up my PS1 mini on my desk again- and of course the shooters. I got hooked playing some of the old shooters on it again. Eventually, Tristram.

@apzpins Rampage on the Atari ST might be the one that comes to mind. Ateast I remember it being very good and faithful to the arcade.
But the correct answer is probably Super Sprint on the ST. It's almost identical to the arcade and extremely fun to play, even today. I didn't mention it because at the time I didn't know it was an arcade game.

Beating people at cruisin usa at Ground Kontrol (an arcade bar) is my highest achievement since men never expect me to beat them. Years of bowling alley practice. I hogged that machine.

The first time I got that current day arcade perfect port feeling was when I imported Batsugun on Sega Saturn back in the day.
While I already had over 60 games for the Saturn at that point, including Radiant Silvergun and Elevator Action Returns, Batsugun just jumped out at me as truly being the "arcade at home".

@outofprintarchive The Saturn was around the sweet spot where we started seeing properly powerful graphics chips in machine's that didn't come with commercial arcade game price tag.

@apzpins In retrospective, I may have (sub)consciously avoided arcade ports for the C64 even back then. But the first and topmost thing on my list of porting horrors has to be Dragons Lair
I don't think I ever played it on arcade because it just seemed like a super stupid game to me to begin and never mind the graphics. But the C64 port!
