#introduction

@Christo_459 thank you, will explore that.
-
@HollieK72 thank you, it's encouraging to see that others had the same experience (and survived

Bookworms are especially welcome. And don't worry, most of us don't bite. My advice is to find conversations you're interested in and boost/favourite the posts you like as a way of getting yourself known. Then, in your own time, start to comment on the posts. Before long you'll be floating your own conversations.
An introduction is good, but it's like knocking on the door and loitering on the doorstep. The thing is to come on in.
@riggbeck thank you, that's exactly how I feel at this moment, like knocking at the door. Looking forward to entering the house .

@LitteRatty welcome! Here’s a list of books if you run out. https://docs.skunkwerks.at/s/kqKw9D__3 i culled this from many sources and am slowly working my way through them
@dch oh, wow, thank you so much!
-
@dropbear many thanks for the kind welcome!

@LitteRatty
In addition to the advice given, I'd say follow people who interact with you, and then interact with them.
See who else they interact with and see if you want to follow them too. When you are following a larger number of people, you can start to drop the ones that have no real interest to you, if you want.
The main thing is to interact. People will follow you back if the interactions are good and of interest to them. It is much more like socialising at a party.
@Maker_of_Things thank you, I'll do my best to fit in (I'm terrible at parties, haha)
-
@simon_brooke oh, I'm so glad you liked some of my portraits! Thank you, this means a lot to me.

@LitteRatty
Same. I am #ActuallyAutistic and really don't like parties and groups of people.
However, here I can take my time, read the room, process the conversations, and then decide if I want to be involved.
Also, no one really minds conversations that are days long and take hours for the next response. Not everyone is nice here, there are some arseholes, you just block them as you would anywhere else.
Some folks, like me, have protected accounts so you have to request to follow. Don't worry about requesting, and don't take it personally if it isn't accepted.
I only allow followers who take the time to say hello. -
@JigmeDatse Thank you for the encouragement, I'll do my best to engage with the community and hopefully will soon make some friends.
I'm going to look for the New Zealand book review, I'm sure I'll be able to find it.
As for my art, this was my first post here so I haven't shared any, but there is the link to my website in my bio. I'd be happy if you visited it and let me know if you found anything out there that attracted your attention.

Welcome!
You'll figure it out in time, worry not. I suggest following @FediTipsAlso worth noting is that many here appreciate accessible ALT texts on images:

-
@Thebratdragon great, I'll start doing just that and see how it goes.

BienvenuYour local instance @bookstodon.com
seems good for booksP.S. Am văzut că unele dintre tablourile tale au ca decor regiunea Sibiului.
Am vizitat-o, inclusiv Păltinișul, cu mulți ani în urmă.
Am o amintire foarte frumoasă despre ea.@oKolobos wow, thank you for this unexpected message in Romanian!
Sibiu is my hometown, very dear to me - the town itself and its whereabouts. I'm so glad you kept nice memories of them.

@suzannespirit Hello, nice to meet you! I'm still trying to figure out the community rules, so I don't know yet if it posting some art from time to time would be acceptable. Anyway, I invite you to visit my website
https://manufineart.com/ , I'm honored and delighted by your interest.I haven't read any of Guy Gabriel Kay's books, but I'm adding his name on my list and will research him in a moment.
@LitteRatty Please do post your art! That is one of the joys of Mastodon. Look out for the hashtag #PortfolioDay
-
@LitteRatty you may also want to look into installing the StreetPass extension for your browser: it's a thingie that lets you know when a web page has metadata that declares an associated Mastodon / Fediverse profile and keeps a list of all the profiles discovered like this, it's another way to find interesting accounts here
@oblomov oh wow, never knew this existed, thanks for the tip!
-
@LitteRatty oh wow. cool that you found your way to the fediverse!
may i share you some links for some ressources that may help you:

@Yonggan thank you, that's useful stuff, will explore those.

@LitteRatty Welcome! Honestly don't worry about it, post what you want to post and chat when and if you want to chat. Most platforms punish you for not being active enough, but there's no such issue on here so just take your time

Lots of us love to see others making art, and as a big reader you've obviously picked a good server there, I'm sure you'll feel at home in no time!
@thegiddystitcher thank you for such a warm and encouraging welcome!

@LitteRatty All sorts of art being posted. If there's content you think may offend your followers, you can add a Content Warning like "nudity" or "political" so they can consent to whether or not they see that.
Looking at your art though, it's perfectly safe. Post whatever you want, use CWs when you want to be considerate, use ALT text so that blind folks can enjoy, and let people use their filters as they please.
This link helped me with ALT text:
How To: Write Good Alt Text - Supercool
Adding useful alt text to images is one of the easiest ways to make your website more accessible. But it's not necessarily an easy thing to do well …

@LitteRatty Welcome to the fediverse.
It is a bit confusing at first, especially when you're used to "the algorithm" directing things (some good and some bad) your way. I see you've already got some suggestions about hashtags to start with, so I won't try to add to that, but they can be a good way to find individuals to follow.
I don't know if you'd be comfortable posting art here, but I'd be very interested in seeing some of your work.
Again, welcome, and best wishes here in the fediverse.
@DaleHagglund thank you for the welcome and for your interest, I'll post some art as soon as I finish answering this introduction post. (Wow, I wasn't expecting so many warm and kind people to respond to this one, my first!)
-
@LitteRatty This can be a great place. I hope it's a good home for you.
@ShaulaEvans thank you, I trust it will become one of my favorite places.
-
@LitteRatty You could try following hashtags for your interests. Over time, that will find you the people and accounts you're interested in.
#book, books, writer, author, writersLife, authorsLife, writingCommunity, fiction, historicalFiction, art, painting, oilPrinting, contemporaryArt, reading, readingList, etc pp, you get it. There's so much art!
@dasgrueneblatt Great suggestions for hashtags to follow, many thanks!
