Waiting for the dentist π¬

Gotta have fillings for the first time nooooo
@alicemcalicepants it takes getting used to the shape, a few days but better than a root canal procedure. I got my first tooth filling in 2024.
-
@alicemcalicepants Wait until your first root canal. That's a blast.
@golgaloth I already had one! But the infection turned out to be too deep, so the tooth got removed anyway

@alicemcalicepants Ouchies.
-
@golgaloth my wallet was certainly unhappy!

@alicemcalicepants If you have a good dentist, the only part that might hurt is the shots to numb your mouth in that area. Some dentists are so good at those that they aren't even very painful, but even if they are, that's only a few seconds.

@alicemcalicepants When I was 15 we moved and went to a new dentist, who said I needed a 1st ever filling. Next time it was 2, time after he said 6. I left and instead of booking the appointment I went into a different dentist - who said I didn't need any! My next filing wasn'tuntil over 40 years later. 40 years between that crook dentist and my one and only other filing.

Both times I've had tooth issues, I've been wrong about exactly which teeth are the problem. Does everyone have difficulty identifying which teeth hurt, or is this me having janky interoception?

@alicemcalicepants this is normal, it is difficult to identify the bad tooth as you cannot see inside your own head - I had to have a rear molar (the one right at the back) extracted a couple of years ago as there was 5mm hole in it (I still have the tooth in a box, as I asked the dentist if I could keep it - I'm going to clean it up with sodium perborate and photograph it

@alicemcalicepants I believe it's quite usual. The mapping of "this nerve ending" to "this location" is basically done entirely in software; this is a lot of what babies are up to. And some places (e.g. the thigh and back) have a very low density of sensors; the neural system lies to you and tells you "exactly here".

@alicemcalicepants in a society where sugar is in quite a lot of food, cavities are unavoidable and a large reason why dentistry is much of a profession at all.

@burnitdown still pretty pleased I've made it to 37 before getting any

Waiting for the dentist

@alicemcalicepants thoughts and prayers (I have one filling, and it wasn't that bad.)
-
@ozeng yup, that's what he did

@alicemcalicepants I think maybe it could be anyone - to some extent depending on which area of toothiness
