I got laid off on Monday.

I got laid off on Monday. They offered me 5 weeks severance after 8 1/2 years. I was given 24 hours to bring in my laptop, and 48 hours to sign the severance agreement or risk getting just two weeks (illegal). I wrote answered with what I’d like as far as severance goes (much more) what the law stipulates, and didn’t sign of course. They wrote me back very sweetly with an 8 week offer, but I’m countering with more. We’ll see what happens next
@patrickworld dammit. I'm sorry.

EIGHT WEEKS.
Back in the day I remember my dad keeping records in a tiny notebook of who "retired" and what they got. There was never no eight weeks. And THAT was considered bein' done dirty.

@patrickworld Damn. Stick to your guns. Typically, a severance package reflects one month for every year worked. Accepting means you can't seek any legal action against them. Sorry to hear of this.

@patrickworld oh no - sorry to hear that and hearing that the company values your long service and loyalty so poorly is appalling.

I can only hope that you can later savior the experience of them asking you to come back as a contractor.
And you can kick back with your favorite beverage for relaxing you contemplate just how you’ll decide and terms you’ll demand

Depending on his economic circumstances, he may have enjoyed the blessing. The economy right now is pretty scary, but in other times, people can now often end up in a place where they are actually very thankful they were given an opportunity to look elsewhere.

Good luck! Make sure you're being advised by someone with legal qualifications. There are often cheaper options available than going full law firm if you look online.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell @patrickworld no consultation period and only five weeks redundancy pay is an insult after eight years of service though.

@patrickworld
I am sorry that after being there for that many years , you have to move on. You will have a great resume though, and wherever you land will be delighted to get someone that stayed with a company for 8+ years. -
