    Cautious on police reform, Becerra risks losing progressives — and his political future

    California Atty. Gen. Xavier Becerra has tried to walk a fine line amid the Black Lives Matter protests, portraying himself as both a civil rights defender and a friend of law enforcement. Critics say he's become too cautious on police use of force, including in the Stephon Clark case.

        "Yelled at a staffer" vs "fought the release of police misconduct records," is not a close contest for me.

        No, I'm not saying that it's OK for a politician to treat their staff badly. I'm saying that y'all are sexist for acting like she's the meanest person in politics.

                        So disappointing.

                        "The attorney general’s actions on law enforcement issues have frustrated some people who supported his election last year, including civil rights attorney John Burris, who represented Rodney King in his civil rights lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department.

                        “I’m disappointed,” Burris said after Becerra’s announcement in the Stephon Clark case. “I supported him wholeheartedly [during the election]. I think I had higher hopes for him in the beginning.”

                        Burris said he has asked Becerra in the last few years to look at other police shootings and the attorney general has always sided with the local district attorneys in not pursuing action against officers."

                          And his stupid debate retort claiming that Porter had never governed. Um, she was in the House for years, Becerra.

                              @spiegelmama @mekkaokereke methinks the problem is the ridiculously enormous political consulting apparatus that serves democrats. seems like most progressives that get elected try to tack more towards the moderate side of the party once they’ve won election and want to get reelected.

                              I understand many sell out (Sinema) but I can’t imagine the paydays are quite so lucrative outside of Congress, so why abandon your base that put you there in the first place? Does no one have principles they live by anymore?

                              I can’t remember the quote, so I’m gonna butcher my paraphrase of it, but, “I’d rather have enemies than none. It means I’ve lived a principled life.”

                                    I'm done with Democrats that want civil rights and accountability for everyone except the police.

                                    Xavier Becerra is wrong to fight release of police officers' crimes

                                    California Attorney General Xavier Becerra seeks to claw back records of police misconduct obtained by investigative reporters from public records requests.

                                      @mekkaokereke
                                      So I'm riding my bicycle on the sidewalk approaching the community college. A Black man is ahead of me. It's the week Michael Brown got murdered.
                                      I say, "coming up behind you."
                                      He steps to the side and slowly raises both hands about a foot to the side as I ride by.
                                      It took me a solid 30 seconds to replay and realize why he did that. I wish I had stopped and said "IT SUCKS THAT YOU HAD TO DO THAT!!!"
                                      Yea, you're gonna lose me in a hurry if you are "cautious" about "police reform."

                                        @mekkaokereke I agree.

                                        But I'm also going to be very very very pragmatic in my voting in the upcoming "primary" - which ever Democratic candidate who is leading in the polls is almost certainly going to get my vote - even if the polls have Becerra and Streyer on top. I really want the fall election to be two Democratic candidates who can then run on who will do a better job.

                                        What I don't want is any GOP candidate on the ballot in the fall

                                        Am I happy? No but not a fan of the jungle primary

                                          @mekkaokereke but since we have it - I'll vote accordingly. Would I much prefer rank choice or something similar - yes. Is that likely here in CA? Nope. or at least not anytime soon.

                                          Until then keeping CA in the firmly blue camp is really important - not least because I'm a taxpayer, homeowner, and parent here and I shudder to think what a mess we could be in for if a MAGA GOP candidate wins in the fall.

                                          And no it's not great.
