I just learned about Cesar Chavez.
" Along with Dolores Huerta and Gilbert Padilla, he co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA)"
"He became a "folk saint" among Mexican Americans, and an icon for organized labor and leftist groups in the U.S. His birthday is a federal commemorative holiday, a state holiday in several states, several places are named after him, and he posthumously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1994."

But..." In 2026, allegations surfaced that he sexually abused Huerta, other women, & minors, resulting in many tributes to and celebrations of him being removed or canceled." (wiki)
IMMEDIATELY, headlines read: "Officials across the US push to remove Cesar Chavez’s name from streets, parks & holidays"
"Hundreds Of César Chávez Schools, Parks & Streets: Calls To Remove His Name Surge Nationwide"
"Georgia Latino group cancels contest amid Cesar Chavez accusations"
Etc.
Even Latinos... 2/n

This is bringing up such a range of emotions.
The woman who partnered with him to create the amazing thing stayed silent until recently because she didn't want to undo the progress being made in workers' protections.
How like a woman. Looking out for others over herself.
Accountability. It seems everyone is on board. And the response is quick.
As it should be.
But why does this happen when it's a non White man?
This part makes me really upset.
Anyway.

Yet it is quite interesting that any of his transgressions is resulting in his complete erasure and disappearance from the public space rather than a rethink and recontextualization of him.
MLK had some issues with infidelity if I recall correctly. It did not disappear him.
Since I don’t know much about the particular charges with respect to Chavez, I don’t have sense of where I would come down on how to rethink his place

The US gov is currently FULL of White men who NEVER faced accountability. I just assume that they are all rapists because so many are and those who aren't are supporting rapists with vigour, which makes them just as evil.
Spanky is currently making himself coins and renaming prestigious institutions with his name...while in office. And it is just being allowed. He is likely a freaking PEDOPHILE.
Anyway.

We cannot, however, ignore literally the giant fucking elephant in the room.
The thick crust cruelty and crime against humanity of epstein society that rules us and occupies the highest levels of economic wealth and economic and political power.
The imbalance of response is an abomination

Rename all the Chavez things after Dolores Huerta and Gilbert Padilla.
Don't cancel the holidays. Just rename them.

@CStamp Yes. This. Same goes for all the streets and schools named after him.
Also, I have connections by marriage to all this - my wife's parents started out as migrant farmworkers in the 1940s. Dolores Huerta is very much revered every bit as much as Chavez.

@GhostOnTheHalfShell He co-founded the thing with 2 women. Nothing needs to be re-contextualized other than two women co-founded something with a man who doesn't need celebrating.

@larand I hope all the things are renamed after her.
