Republicans talk about the SAVE Act as if it just requires a photo ID.

The voter registration and proof of citizenship requirements are the real problem, as most state driver's licenses won't count as valid ID.

Having to register in person with an overpriced passport, which most people don't need, or a birth certificate in your current name, is designed to frustrate millions of Americans, especially married women who changed their names.

Trump is begging Republicans to pass it for a reason.

    @gwynnion
And you can already tell it's just to be enforced against population centers and blue states. Everything will be ignored in every sundown town and affluent suburb out there.

Unless valid voting IDs are completely free of charge, it's a poll tax. Our elections are already secure.

Trump insisting the SAVE Act will guarantee Republicans win the midterms despite abysmal poll numbers should be a dead giveaway.

But of course, the conservative owned media are likewise being disingenuous.

Even in blood red Texas, my driver's license is likely insufficient.

As a trans woman, I doubt I could ever prove my citizenship to their satisfaction since my birth certificate is still in my dead name.

        And that's the point.

@gwynnion Does Texas even still let you change the name and/or gender on your birth certificate? Because I suspect a lot of people forgot there were US states where you could be on HRT for a decade, have had multiple surgeries, and be at a point where not a single person knows or even clocks you as anything other than your identified gender, and it still won't be enough years before the current administration.

I dont have my birth certificate because my parents held onto it, and never passed it down to me because they died without letting me know where the thing was hidden in their home.

And for the millionth time, "voter fraud" is fake. It's been proven to be fake many, many times. It's not real.

It doesn't happen except in the rarest cases, and even then it's usually white Republicans doing it!

@disorderlyf Texas used to. But it was all kind of sketchy. You can't anymore.

But no, they're not forgetting that you can be 30 years into transition and not have an updated birth cert. That's the point.

Hell, when it isn't republicans it's usually just a mistake, not even intentional. Convicts unaware they couldn't vote for X race when they were told they could vote for Y races. Or a grandmother mixing up what ID she was using or whatever.

@disorderlyf Ken Paxton has blocked all of those options as part of his ongoing war on trans people and has been collecting a database of people requesting name and gender marker changes even on their driver's licenses.

My name change was done decades ago but never affected my birth certificate, and even a court order to that effect would be refused these days.

@GreenRoc As an FYI, many states/counties will let you order a replacement copy of your BC if you need it for some reason. You typically have to provide a picture of your ID or similar because they won't give it out to just anyone. But if you need it for something, it's like $30 plus postage (and spoons to fill out government forms).

It's still not something that most people should need easy access to and requiring it for random things is absolutely toxic AF.

But in case you wanted yours and didn't know...

Republicans have said repeatedly that women are their political enemies and they don't think women should be allowed to vote because of it.

They think they would win every election in perpetuity forever.

                        Think about that.

But this would obviously impact a lot of poor, marginalized, and low propensity voters as well.

It's facially illegal and unconstitutional for a lot of reasons, too, of course, but you can't rely on Republican captured courts to strike it down either.

The SAVE Act is a classic Republican tactic of leveraging Americans' racism and a fake panic over immigrants to push what is effectively a soft coup.

If I were local, I'd offer to help. It's basically the same process I went through to do my name change on mine. But I'm not. 😢

But, yeah, those processes are opaque and confusing at best. 😩

@faithisleaping I appreciate the kind thoughts, thank you.

I do have some support people around, but I keep forgetting to ask them to help.

                                    I'll try to remember someday.

@GreenRoc If it's helpful, I can at least look up the process for you if you tell me what state you were born in.

Or not. I'm just trying to be helpful, not trying to insert myself where I'm not needed.

@faithisleaping I'm in California, but dont worry about helping here. I should just contact my social worker.

Republicans and the media will tell you these concerns are overblown.

So why is Trump so desperate for it that he's vowed to veto all other legislation until it gets passed?

Oh did he switch his 'never sign anything else' to 'veto everything else'?
