    I guess this is as good a time as any to remind people that

    if you only know how to contact friends through a single platform, you're liable to lose touch with them sooner or later.

    Give them alternatives. ANY alternatives.

    Any single place can just blow up overnight. And if something is starting to smell like a brewing dumpsterfire, that SHOULD be a clear sign.

    @anthropy This.

    I have lost contact with people because apps were deleted or someone was removed from a group. Always get another way to contact. Email, phone, XMPP, Matrix, smoke signals, whatever

          This is excellent advice in general - a single point of failure is bad, and a *vendor* is a single point of failure no matter how robust their services are, as they may suddenly decide you're a problem - even if you aren't.

          So - multiple messaging mechanisms. Multiple backup options. Multiple banks - you'll be happy the day your first bank thinks there's fraudulent activity and locks your card. And multiple authentication mechanisms where available.

              @culper @anthropy This, so much. I always tell people to get addresses and phone numbers for your close friends. The people you would really want to keep in touch with if all else fails. Being able to make a phone call or write a letter is really important. If all else fails you'll always have that.

                @fluffywolfjasper Yes it is. It is very versatile. I think other apps, like, session, simpleX, signal, have taken over in popularity. XMPP still works well and can be decentralized as you want it to be. It can do texting, files, pics, and even voice. Encryption is pretty good as well. Matrix seems to be the new platform that everyone loves, but requires a lot more resources.

                  @xoagray @anthropy This is not a bad idea. At one point, I had no idea where a friend of mine lived. They lived in the country. I had only been there a few times, and always used GPS directions to get there. I forgot my phone one day, and had no idea how to get there. Lesson learned, write down names and addresses

                    @culper @anthropy Yep, lost contacts when I left Failbook and cancelled the account.

                    I'd posted about going to leave, asking people to update their contact details with me.
                    Many I did get updated and alternate platforms, but also for many I didn't. OK, most of those probably came as friends via interactions with friends.
                    But, for those I lost contact with its a shame we did, but staying on Failbook was not an option any more.
