      People in #USSR also felt some positive impact of Stalin's death as it gave the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (CPSU) a pretext to revoke the most repressive policies introduced at peak of Stalin's paranoia. Thousands of political prisoners were released, that is those who survived the Great Purge, imprisonment in GULag concentration camps and deportation of millions of national minorities:

      The "thaw" was short-lived and it was terminated by Brezhnev who returned to the hard line supported by the KGB.
