    Here we go!

    1000012053.jpg

Since FediCon last year I try to do a livestream of the fedi events I go to. This is the start of the FediMTL livestream.

Let's see how well I can keep this up 😅

FediMTL streaming tickets still available! 50% off for fedi friends with code SWF50 😊

    FediMTL 2026 - Webcast - February 24th 2026 - Thepointofsale.com

FediMTL 2026 | Digital Sovereignty and the Social WebConference · Panels · NetworkingFediMTL brings international and Canadian leaders to Montreal for a full day of talks and discussions focused on digital sovereignty and the future of the open social web.Co-presented by the Social Web Foundation, Qlub, and FediHost, the event is designed for developers, creators, journalists, policymakers, and citizens who want to better understand how the fediverse — a decentralized technology — enables people and communities to regain control over their data, support local digital infrastructure, and build interoperable, sustainable online communities.Under the theme “An Independent Digital Future,” FediMTL will feature conferences, panels, and exchanges with key figures from the social web ecosystem, including co-authors of the ActivityPub protocol, open-source platform developers, and leaders working in public-interest digital innovation. The event will take place with seated audiences and will also be available via live webcast.In-person tickets: $50 + tax (includes lunch and coffee breaks) — click hereVirtual tickets: $20 + tax Tickets at the door: $65 + tax (includes lunch and coffee breaks) Follow FediMTL on GoToSocial: https://social.fedimtl.ca/@info-----*Please note that Le Ministère does not accept cash. We accept credit and debit cards only. All ticket purchases are made online, even on the day of the show at the door.

The venue, Le Ministère, is an intimate concert venue housed in a former bank.

Super cool! The closest thing we have to that at home is a former bank turned shawarma joint. Still neat, but not the same 😏

@pluralistic@mamot.fr answering a question about Threads defederation, noting that it is "reactionary", and that the ones you hurt are the users, the "normie friends" you want to talk to.

The act of defederating from threads assumes that the people on Threads are the problem, not the fact that it's owned by Meta. (says Cory)

Q: How can/should Canadian technologists sell escape hatches to other companies?

A: Cory reminding us about John Deere DRM'd tractors. John Deere bricked hundreds of tractors taken from the Ukraine by the Russians to Chechnya.

Cool from a cyberpunk POV but absolutely chilling when you realize that Trump tomorrow could order John Deere to trigger kill switches on every one of their tractors operating in Canada. (says Cory)

Q: is it better to pick a fight with big tech, or is it better to build open alternatives?

                                    Cory:

                                    • references Trump wanting Greenland, and then volatility of his tarrifs
                                    • if you plan assumes America is a market you can rely on, you're being naïve
