Although new towns (eg: Milton Keynes) have a bit of a bad reputation in the UK, they did do what they set out to achieve. And it’s not like Canada doesn’t have a lot of space.

Reply to Has Canada ever given thought to building so-called “new towns”? on Thu, 28 May 2026 14:45:41 GMT

@heliomass the idea that we don't lack space is a bit misguided imo. People generally dont want to live North, so that removes about 90% of land, then of the 10% that is left, most of it is farm (which we want to keep) and forests (which we also want to keep but a bit less so than farms).

Also because of things like regulations to keep people alive, we cannot expect to build new infrastructure cheaply, so it'll be so, so, so expensive to build a city from scratch in 2026. Much more so than in the past (because back then we didnt care as much for worker compensation, safety, climate change, sustainability)

Densifying is the only option if we want to maximize finances, the environment and social inclusion

res260@infosec.exchange

Reply to Has Canada ever given thought to building so-called “new towns”? on Thu, 28 May 2026 14:37:55 GMT

@heliomass There has been some talk recently of designating some smaller cities for significant growth. I think places like London ON have expressed interest. I haven’t heard any of any actual decisions to move forward, though.

We definitely need to have more than a handful of large cities that attract the growth.

david@cosocial.ca
