Shortly after hatching, the caterpillar begins building a protective case around itself, using silk and materials gathered from its surroundings, including twigs, bark and sometimes tiny stones. Like a tiny turtle, the caterpillar carries this portable shelter everywhere it goes.

As it grows, it enlarges the case by attaching bigger pieces to the outside, creating a tapered, cone-like structure that helps camouflage it from predators. The caterpillar lines the inside of the case with soft silk for protection.

When the caterpillar is ready to transform, it secures the case to a surface and pupates inside. Adult males emerge as small winged moths that leave the case to search for females. The adult females are usually wingless and remain inside the case for the rest of their lives.
