The profile backup feature, when enabled, will take a snapshot of your profile and pack it into a single file that you can restore from on the same or a different machine. You can choose to encrypt the backup with a passphrase.

In a recent Nightly, visit about:settings#sync and scroll down to the Backup section to manage it.

The "cannot restore" sounded to me like, the backup did not restore (fully) to the "custom" profile path. AFAIK this is a supported usecase.

These are not supported and known to have various security issues. I recommend using a supported Firefox version from Mozilla
