This is very related to what I was talking about with a friend recently.

Friends calling and saying "what are you doing?" is rude, even if it's innocent and unintentional. I've really tried to break myself of that habit. I have no right to demand explanations of someone else's time. I can simply ask "Would you like to do ABC?" or even "Are you busy?" is better.

It seems like not a big deal, but I've seen them field calls and then the other party invites themselves to join.

You do not have to explain why or what you are doing instead.

"No thanks, but thank you for inviting me" is sufficient, and not rude.
